I can't find the size of the valve shim, or Yamaha calls them valve pads in the service manual. No, I don't need to do an adjustment after 6 days of ownership. But I am selling off support stuff for my Vee and I'm not sure if my 9.48mm shim kit is going to be useful on the S10 or not. Anyone know the size of the shims/pads?

The valve shims part # are 3LD-12168-xx in sizes from 1.20mm to 2.40mm in 0.05mm increments. They are 9.48mm in diameter.

These shims were first used in the Yamaha TDM850 and TRX850 bikes from the early 90's. They are also the same shims that are used in the V-Stroms, FJR1300's plus lots of other bikes.

Hotcams makes a nice set http://www.cyclebuy.com/shopping/hotcams/shimkits_948.htm

Hope this helps.

Hi guys. I've just searched ebay because I want to have some shims ready (will need to do my valves soon). If you search tdm850 or trx850 or Vstrom valve shims, the result i keep getting is that the shims are 9.5mm in diameter and are in a kit going from 2.3mm-3.2mm.
Different to your figures. Should I buy them or try to find some with your figures. These results are from ebay uk..i dont really want to order them from the USA. Cheers in advance for any help/ideas.

LOL, OP dates back to 2011. Your number should be good. .02mm is nothing.

Thanks..all helps. So you reckon the 9.5 diameter rather than 9.48 is ok...but the other thing I was wondering is about the thickness. Steve reckoned it was 1.2-2.4 but hotcams keeps coming up with 2.3-3.2 for the TDM (XT1200Z).
Am i being annoying??

To show .02mm the way my American senses can understand, .000787 is nothing, really. Could be a manufacturing error, could be the mic was held just off center.
A parts fiche shows 1.55-2.40. They don't show an OEM kit. Maybe you should get the parts made for this motor just to be safe? I know you're looking for a kit, but sometimes things don't work out the way we want.

Ok...thanks..and good advice. Im hoping a friend who knows more about this might have time to help me and I suspect he'll have a few suggestions too. This is all because I want all the bits ready before I start the job because I can't have the bike off the road for more than a couple of days. Thanks for your help.
