Valve shim numbers.

Hey Y'all,

I'm in the middle of my first valve adjustment. Lots of good info here on the site by the way. Doing my valve check I found a couple of my exhaust valves to be too tight so I now have the cam shafts off and waiting for my hot cams shim kit to arrive. Sitting down tonight I decided to go ahead and calculate which new shims I would need. This is my problem, the OEM shims on the bike are numbered so I am thinking how easy. The first two intake shims were both 210. The next two were both 209. Exhaust 201, 201, 198, 192. The new shims and the Yamaha OEMs come in 0.05mm intervals. So.... what do these numbers mean on my shims that came off by bike. 210 I assume to be 2.10 mm but what are the rest. Do the shims from the factory come in 0.01mm intervals? I can get out my caliper and measure each but since they are numbered already I though there must be some method to the madness. Searching for this doesn't get any obvious answer.

Thanks in advance for any help....

Factory shims are in .01mm. Hard to buy in those increments. Sometimes you can trade out at the service dept. for those.

Hey. Just received the 2014-15-16 S10 Valve Clearances from a fellow inmate. Thanks Jim

COLD

EXHAUST: 0.22 - 0.28 mm
.0087 - .0110 Inch

INTAKE : 0.10 - 0.16 mm
.0039 - .0063 Inch

Not sure if this is the same as the Gen 1 bikes.

So the 14 and up is in fact the exact same clearance specs as the gen1 models. Good to know. As to this shim question, it's mighty strange they would fit valve shims in those small increments yet not sell them for service. No one has ever commented to this up til now far as I remember.
My valves were all perfect center spec at 26,000 miles a couple weeks ago. Glad I won't need to find out til another 26,000 miles passes.

Useful information as I am approaching my first clearance check with 23K+ miles currently. If anything needs adjustment I'll probably order a Hot Cams kit. I already have one for my ST1300 but unfortunately the Yamaha uses a different diameter shim. The cost of the kit is paid for the first time you make a single adjustment.

Thanks for the info. 0.01 increments seems excessive to me. Sand paper, good idea. What specifically did you use?
Years ago when working on a Fiat with an overhead cam and shims in a bucket we resorted to grinding them down as getting the correct shims proved difficult.

Tenere shims are the same size as used on most 450 class motocross bikes and these bikes get lots of valve adjustments, so any shop that does much work on MX bikes will likely have a selection of the odd sizes available for sale or swap.
