All recent street bike Yamahas with shim valves seem to have intervals of 40K km (about 24,800 miles) while most of the other Japanese brands are somewhat shorter (typically 20K-30K km). Whether this reflects better valve technology by Yamaha or simply they being a little less conservative is hard to say - valve check intervals are pretty arbitrary with respect to the tradeoff between shortened valve life or failure (due to a valve being run badly out of spec) vs. the maintenance expense of doing more frequent checks.

Several guys on the WR250R thread have been into their top ends around 24,000 and found couple of the valves at the minimum! We pretty much wring the little 250s neck so that is pretty impressive and another reason I have the S10 on order! ;D

Mark, I agree with what you say about recommending the shorter intervals, but based on my experiences, I have seen alot of guys over the years on Honda ST1100/1300 bikes go well into 50-100k miles never needing a shim adjustment.

Yep, went with local yamaha dude. I asked them about it months ago, and the salesman already knew it was going to be PDP, just didn't know when it would start. SO is just getting to like the MTS, LOL. Only mine has been ordered at this dealership to date.

I'll second that. My ST1100 had almost 120,000 miles on it when I traded it in on the ST1300. the 11 has all its original shims. Ditto the 13 so far. My 02 FZ1 had its first check at 26K and no shims were needed.
