Does anyone know if the s10 uses shims(and what kind), or is it screw type? Is there a manual available for the s10 at this time?

thanks,

Clem

There is a manual to buy in Australia and some other countries. Yamaha uses a shim under bucket like most modern engines. The recommended valve adjustment interval is 24k miles. Over the years shims are a really good way of adjustment, when I had my Honda ST1100's many people could go75-100k miles without needing a valve adjustment.
There have been manuals floating around on the www.xtz750.com site and a few other places.

Thanks Jeff, I was hoping too buy some shims for the DL 650 and use them on the S10. Do you know what size they are? Suzuki uses the 7.48mm.
As far as the manual, I guess I can wait till they arrive here in the states.

I am ready for it to be here though, wish it were May already.

Moto, I do not know what the outside diameter is for the tenere. I will have to see about it sometime. The VSTroms use two different shims, one size for DL1000, and one size for the DL650. It is hard to say. I really wouldn't worry about it, unless you are going to put 24k miles on in a short period of time. I didn't even see where you live.

I live in two places, Maine and Florida. I was just trying to buy some to fit both. I do put smiles on though.

that is wonderful Moto. I would love to be able to spend a winter in maine with all of the snow. But then when would it be a good time to be in florida cuz summer sure isn't. After living here in seattle for 4 years, I don't even like the sun that much any more. My wife thought i was nuts when we went to Hawaii this year and i wanted to be out of the sun 3 days before we came back home.

I bought a service manual from xt660.com. It came in .pdf format on CD and seems to be a complete manual. It was only about $30. They refer to the shims as valve pads and they range in thickness from 1.2 - 2.4mm (.0472 - .0945 in)

That' a huge adjustment range: .047". Usually it only takes a couple of thousandths thinner shims (if that), to get them into spec. at the first adjustment.

THis may be the range, but remember, we need to know the outside diameter of the shims are as well since there are two diamter versions out there. I noted that in an earlier post here.

The service manual doesn't give a diameter, but does show a drawing. These pads are very small and are placed under the lifter, they appear to be just larger in diameter than the valve stem.

That was why I asked. I wanted to know if they are the same type Hot cam 7.48mm shims used on the DL, therefore making sense in buying the kit and having it on hand.

On this page you can download the complete service manual (43.7mb) and parts catalogue (1.6mb).

http://www.konepool.demon.nl/de_xt1200z_pagina.htm

I checked also the valve clearance, but it is not so easy to remove the cylinderhead cover, there is almost no space to get it out.
you have to follow the guide correctly and there is a lot to remove and loosen.
Greetings from Holland.

I looked up one of the part # for a shim, then did a google search. It came up same used on the new Vmax, then did a google search on Vmax valve shim kit and they came up as 9.48mm, so I "think" unless eroneous info posted that is the shim size we will be looking at.
Thanks Ron that is what I was looking for.

that's cool, same diameter as the dl1000 - I still have a shim kit for that. Good information - Thanks.

Good that the XT12 has a very long valve maintenance period.
Same as the FJR, and if it is as rock-solid as the FJR - we are in for a treat!!!

hey colorider, do you know if guys on the fjr forums are getting the mileage from the FJR's without an adjustment as they used to get from the ST's?

Well the interval is all ready longer on the FJR than the ST - and yes, many FJR's are getting longer than that as well - or so I read...... I'm hoping the SuperT does equally well as the FJR in that respect.

I had one exh shim way out of spec at 15k miles on my DL1000 VeeSTrom. I am convinced it was that way from the factory as I heard ticking noise at time of the first service. The dealer told me i was crazy, didn''t know what i was talking about and the modern engines make more noise with lots of stuff going on inside. NOPE, I knew what i was talking about.
