Upper Triple Tree Rotated

Some bastard thought it would be fun to push my bike over in the parking lot of the hotel on the way to the ST rally. The bars contacted the pavement and it appears rotated the upper triple tree so there is quite a misalignment between the forks and the bars. I was abit surprided it rotated given that I had just checked the torque on the nut at 95 ft lbs.

OK to ridd with the misalignment and to save me a search what size is the nut 21mm? 1 1/8? Thanks

might put it on the center stand and loosen all the fork pinch bolts, compress the forks a couple of times, tweek front wheel to straighten and retighten will often do it

The 2 previous posts are likely the fix. But since you asked, this is a quote from the thread that Jaxon started about loose "steering tubes" :

**************

The Steering Stem Nut is what you are talking about and that is the same nut that Jaxon was talking about in the OP. I just got off the phone with him and he used a 27 mm socket to tighten it down.

***************

by the way, you might be burning inside over the baseless vandalism. It's like getting your car keyed. It just stings.

But be sure about this..........
You may not get to witness it, but what I will call "universal-law" will repay the favor.

That will do. even if you can't torque at the time, just tighten with a wrench to get going.

I would not loosen all the fork pinch bolts or your forks will slid up out of the triple tree & hit your bars!

I would loosen the upper triple clamp pinch bolts (1 per side) and loosen the big nut on top of the upper triple clamp then bounce the forks, knock the front wheel up against a tree, etc to straighten everything back up and tighten things down.

just a follow up. Rode 60 miles with the bars twisted . Bought a 1 1/16 socket but since I had recently torqued the center nut to 95 ft lbs it would not move with my standard ratchet. Looking lost in the Canadian Tire parking lot , a Triumph owner comes to the rescue. Back to his garage. Loosen the big nut loosen the upper triple tree pinch bolts, everything is now loose and free at the top, center triple tree, tighten everything up to spec, good as new EXCEPT I see the bars had rotated enough to put a nice size ding in my gas tank. The paintless dent repair guy says he can fix it as good as new for $165 bucks.

Good Luck pursuing a small claim in an area you do not live in (assuming that you do not stay in hotels close to home). Not being a negative Ned, but what are you looking to get? Is your bike insured? I'd say pay the $165 to get the tank fixed and.... ::001::

The total damage exceeded $1000. The claim is in my jurisdiction. And as far as anger, well its a normal human emotion not to be denied and not to be prolonged. I'm beyond the killing stage ;D

I see the part about the 165 dollar damage, what's the other damage that got you to 1000? Sorry about the news.

Never meant to aggravate you or the situation, but we never got the "rest of the story".
Good luck with the situation.
