Hi guys I worked on the Dodge while my buddy worked on Tenere. He had to leave before putting bike back together. I understand the push pins for the upper cowls but what about the other two connection points. It looks like it takes bolt from inside but no threads on cowl. So if you try a nut there is no way to hold it in place while trying to tighten.

Does anyone else struggle with starting some of the threaded screws in these panels? On mine it seems like the last one on either side never wants to start. I've replaced a couple of the threaded clips but still have to frequently remove a clip to ensure alignment and get the threading started. They will start fine off the bike, but it seems like the alignment has to be spot-on...

I do. Seems like at least one or two of the screws just do not want to either start right, or threaten to strip the threads. The only thing to do is sit back for a sec and try another 15 times. ::025:: They will eventually go properly.

Yes the side panel fasteners can be a PITA. Be patient, try different angles, be patient, flashlight behind the panel, be patient, don't be in a hurry,... did I say be patient.

I’ve noticed this problem too. There’s virtually no lead-in on these screws or the holes, so the alignment has to be perfect. I have not had this issue with my Hondas. I think Honda provides a bit more lead-in on the holes. The screws don’t look that different. Wish they’d gone with the 1/4 turn fasteners throughout.

One trick I found that helps is to put a little silicone grease on the rubber grommet for the alignment locating dowel. It's seems to help let the fairing sit tighter and allows the screws to start easier. Especially the left side, top one, just under the indicator.

Should be 2 pushpins per side.

I have removed both side panels countless times. I have found that starting all the screws before tightening any of them helps.

That and using a toothpick to line up the captive nut before starting the screw.

Glad I'm not the only one who has had problems with those screws!!!! Ugh!!!
+1
I thought it was just me. Kind of relieved actually! Since this is a my biggest complaint about the bike, I guess I don't have too much to complain about! I, for one, would happily invest in some after-market screws/clips that were more forgiving.

Dont tighten each screw. just get them all in then tighten them as a group last thing.

No offence but it seems lots of guys in here just do not get how nuts and bolts and push clips are supposed to work.

Grew up on a farm and know how nuts and bolts are SUPPOSED to work! I have adapted to the "start them all first" approach, but still frequently have difficulty with at least one per side.

Agreed, that's a standard rule of thumb for any mechanical assembly process and anyone not assembling things this way probably ought to let a mechanic do their work for them. Unfortunately, in the case of these faring screws, it doesn't seem to help. More than once, I've had to put everything down, walk away, have a beer and come back to it after I've calmed down, lest I be tempted to force things. I dunno what Yamaha's deal is, I never have this issue with my Honda ST's bodywork, and it's got a LOT of screws!
