Unused space under the passenger seat ?

Has anybody made use of the sapce under the rear seat luggage rack? I need space to fit the starcom1 intercom. With plugs and cables it needs a lot of space. The area under the rack is large but doesn't look water tight. I'm thinking of cutting access into the top and fixing a cover plate.
Any ideas gratefully received.

A tiny pelican case could fit.

Drill and grommet/silicone seal the wire portals and it will be waterproof.

I installed my Starcom 1 intercom in a tankbag with a remote volume control mounted thru the top of the bag.
Really made a nice setup and easy to move from bike to bike.
I have since changed to a Sena bluetooth intercom system so my complete Starcom unit including the tankbag is currently on Ebay for sale. Do a search on Ebay for "starcom1 tankbag" if you would like to see it.

There's a thread somewhere around here by a guy who took a dremel cutter and opened it. Don't remember how small the item was that he was trying to put there and I think there were some plastic stiffeners, but he got 'er done.

Yup , thats the kind of thing I'm looking for. The Starcom fitted nicely in the FJR under the passenger seat, and thats where I'd like it on the ST. I've had the under seat rack off and there would be enough room with a bit of carving. I think a cover plate with quick fasteners is in order.

I'm using bluetooth at the moment, but it is not as good as the wired system , in my opinion.

I must have missed the thread as it was something I considered as well. I was concerned that the strength would be compromised if too much material was removed and it would have been better if it was made out of metal. I'm now planning to install my RotoPax mount on this same piece, so doubt I will use any of the space underneath for anything other than the mounting hardware.

Well I guess that answers the question of whether you carry passengers very often :D Any particular reason why you're choosing that method rather than a rack for that spot, ala Touratech or the still-under-development version by Jesse?

I have the IMC Moto unit and mounted it under the Driver seat. Any reason why you cannot do the same? The Starcom looks to be about the same size. Mine fits easy enough with all the cables and all.

Please post pics of this set up when you are complete. I was considering the same idea for when I actually get around to buying the rotopax can......

Has anyone found a clever way of utilizing the space under the bracket beneath the passenger seat ? . Took that bracket off yesterday and found out there is a lot of unused space there that might be used for tools or whatever. I would like to do something to make it easier to access, there are 6 bolts holding it down.

Threads merged.

There's not really lots of space. Pretty common place for tail light flashers, electrical connections which do not need to be accessed, etc.

.

I had mine off and modified on my first Tenere, but have not bothered with my new one yet. IIRC, besides the actual mounting hardware, you must also remove the hardware for the grab rails to pull the panel. Pretty much a PITA for any kinda of frequent access.
