Yamaha UK have sent me a warrenty check letter which invited me to get mine checked for issues before the warrenty expired. Mine is one of the 1st edition bikes .
Its just been in and they replaced all spokes and nipples (they had started to pit/blacken) some of ther brake banjo bolts which had turned brown and the front water pipe as the paint had started to peel off the last one (this is the 2nd one as the 1st one had turned completely rusty) .
I got the bike back and had need to remove the radiator side panel as my hid ballast had failed, whilst it was off I gave it a bit of a clean and found rust on the frame :( . It has started to shed paint on the lhs frame tube/engine mount and has bubbled the paint inside the tube leading to the engine bolt. Further checks found similar rust on the rear frame bolt tubes just below the seat (under the big rubber grommets) and on a small frame bracket near the lhs front tank mount .
It would appear the frame paint is only a thin layer and can fail easily at the sharp edges of frame tunes/brackets , my local dealer is taking this up with Yam UK but doesnt think they will authorise a new frame only cleaning repainting of affected areas. I'm wondering if its also rusting where you cant see (inside the tubes) .. I was reasonably happy with what had been covered upto this point and to cap it off my ignition switch threw a wobble where it wouldn't accept the key to unlock the park lock.. mucho fiddling got it free.
Bike has had a reasonably easy life 5.4k miles, garaged and coated in ACF50 in the winter with only minimal cold weather use so I have slight downer on Yam Quality at the mo...

I would have thought a Jap bike would have been more durable finish-wise, and in every other way for that matter. Guess all manufacturers are cheaping-out in this economy. Too bad, I was considering one of these bikes, not now though.

Companies need to just accept the fact that in today's world of easy and instant access to reports regarding problematic issues with their products, they simply can't get away with that BS like they used to.

Wishing you good luck with your warranty issues.

Nothing on Mine yet. 2 years old.

The only thing that I know will be a bit of a problem is the lower bolt on the water pump housing, I always give that a squirt of WD40 after a clean.

However, I don't have to deal with salt around here. If I do find some surface rust I fix it. The Strom and the SV had some so far none on either YAMAHA.

However the plating on the spokes are a bit dodgy. Always have been. I'll get some SS jobs of it looks too bad.

By biggest issue used to be fine dust. The last two years though I don't think there was any dust in the country within 4000Km of me.

But to me it looks like YAMAHA (UK) are keen to get some feedback actually asking people to come in for warranty checks before it expires. ???

Is this normal? ARE they insane?

I noticed this recently on my ignition switch. A couple of drops of light oil freed things up. Need to remember to do this occasionally.

With thousands of praise reports by owners. And Thousands of miles run all over the world without anything significant pointing to the S10 being "low quality".

That one rust post talked you outta buying an S10?

You sure you really wanted one?

G you don't really think that they're that interested do you? .... What they want is for you to take your two year old bike in to the dealership where you might just be inclined to trade it for a new one ::)
I've had a number of those letters ... the dealer gets paid (albeit at reduced rates) for the inspection and then again for anything they can get away with in terms of replacement of parts. I had a new tank, mirrors and seat on my FZ1 (2009) after two years and my bikes are very, very well cared for. Yamaha finish isn't the best but if looked after it's OK.

Ah Grasshopper understands now Master. They don't do that here. In fact they just tend to import stuff. If you didn't check web sites and go visit dealers you would be forgiven for thinking all the bikes were imported direct. (sometimes they are).

I've noticed a small amount of surface rust around the left side engine mount. Shame as it's the only blemish on an otherwise spotless bike.
