In just reading the 'alone in death valley' article and the tester mentioned about disabling the abs by 'you can switch off ABS by putting the SuperTen on its center stand and starting it in first gear, with the tire spinning. But I left it on. '
Is this true? Has any owner tried this method?

I had to do the rear brakes last week. When I was done and it was still on the center stand, I started it make sure everything was good. Then I thought I would try the abs trick. It wasn't first gear that did it, it was putting in second gear. When I did this the engine light immediately came on. I assume that was the warning that the abs was shut off. It didn't go off until I shut the bike off restarted it and drove it a short distance.

Yep, it's second gear not first. ABS will stay off until you shut the bike off. In other words, by shutting the engine down by putting down the kickstand but not turning off the key will keep the ABS off. Although you're using battery this is convenient if you're taking a quick break and don't want to run the engine. Then, once you restart the engine the ABS is still disengaged.

Must be a blast to ride in the bush with no abs? ::022::
Actually, I find it quite essential to ride without ABS when on the dirt. I have an "off" switch for ABS. It allows much better control of the rear wheel when in the dirt, primarily by dragging the rear wheel, to either stabilize the bike on loose downhills, or by sliding it a little bit to get it to turn.

For about $10 you can make your own.
water proof switch, relay, and a switched dc source.
