Turn any riding glove into a touchscreen sensitive glove

You may have already seen this trick, but I hadn’t, so I did a quick write up of it in case any of you wanted to try it.

I usually have my phone mounted on the bike when I ride so I can listen to music. I wear gloves, so it’s impossible to swipe past a song on the phone with my gloves on, since the touchscreen won’t work with my gloves. You could buy touchscreen sensitive gloves, or you could use this cheap fix; for $11.00, you can make every pair of gloves you have touchscreen sensitive.

You need some electrically conductive thread; I bought a spool of it on Amazon, though some better stocked craft/hobby stores may have it on hand. Here’s the link:

https://www.amazon.com/Adafruit-Stainless-Medium-Conductive-Thread/dp/B00SK8M62Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482354720&sr=8-1&keywords=conductive+thread

I just did the index finger on my left hand, since I just need it to swipe the touchscreen to change songs. You could do the finger and thumb if you want to try something like enlarging the screen (obviously, something you wouldn’t do while riding).

The trick is that the thread has to go all the way through the glove, so it can touch your finger inside the glove. I sewed from the outside (the lining of the gloves was too thick to turn the gloves inside out), and made large loops from the tip of the finger down towards the palm. The loops are about a half inch long. I made sure I could feel the thread inside the fingertip of the glove. Once the large loops were made, I ran a few stitches across the fingertip, perpendicular to the large loops, to tack the loops down so they didn’t snag on anything. You don't need to be a great seamstress to do this fix; if you can thread a needle, this shouldn't be any problem.

In spite of how bulky the gloves are, you can still swipe the screen, or dial a phone number (again, not while riding!). It also works for a GPS screen.

its a cool idea, or you could glue/sew the tip of a stylus onto your glove.....
Or you you use a two piece metal snap and put it through your glove. This was easier.

I don't want to reach into my tank bag to grab a stylus while I'm riding.
I don't want to be mucking with my phone when I'm riding

I'm not mucking with my phone. I'm swiping across the screen. I can do that without looking at the phone, the same way you can shift gears without looking at your foot.

Not downplaying your ingenuity chief, I just have a different approach...potato, potahto

I have the stylus tethered to the bag so if I had to, I could pull it out and swipe without fear of dropping and losing it. Generally, with the BT Sena, I just use Siri voice commands.

Cool idea...I never have my phone visible when riding, but when stopped I do check it. I usually just lick my glove tip, yummy, and it works for the 4 seconds I need it to.

Great idea. I think I'll be trying this. I don't fiddle with a phone much, but when I do (for music) this'll make it easier.
