After 130, 728 happy miles and a long night of de-farkeling, I traded my 2012 Tenere in for a brand new 2014 yesterday. The 2012 was flat out awesome. It was the first motorcycle I have ever owned that was everything I wanted. I never thought once about getting a different bike. In the brief 250 miles I've ridden the new bike, I notice the many little changes and enhancements Yamaha has made, and am very impressed. The stock windshield is great - I have it in the lowest position, and the airflow is definitely improved. It will take me a little while to get used to cruise control, which is a really neat feature. The display menus are mind boggling, and I haven't figured out how to customize (or even consistently re-set) them yet. The new bike is definitely smoother, except in the throttle department, which I think is a bit touchier than the old one was, though fueling does seem better.

All the goodies - panniers, tail rack, Ohlins front and rear suspension, Jaxon's skid plate, etc will transfer over to the 2014, which is a really nice bonus.

Looking forward to many happy miles on the new bike, but am sad to see my old one go.

Chris

I just did the exact same thing last weekend, Nov 15th. It was a sad but glad time. That new Bike smell is something to savor!

I've tracked your odometer since bringing my tenere home two years ago. I've said from day one that this was my 100k mile bike and watched with envy as you reported your mileage. Wish you safe travels on the new steed.

I was like cb0802...only I found this forum before I bought the bike and learned of your mileage. I watched the forums for you posting about how many miles you have now and I one day, hopefully, will reach that many miles on the big girl. Always gave me a little piece of mind knowing someone had taken theirs that far with no real issues to speak of. Congrats on the new bike, so how long till you get to that first oil change? A couple days? One day?

Sail2 gets ANOTHER Super Tenere!
And thus continues in his role of ultimate field tester. (though he might no claim that himself)

No doubt many folks with Teneres are\were\will be influenced by his experiences.

I, for one, are grateful. It increases my faith in this amazing machine. And I already had ample.

Good luck with the fresh one!

Chris,

Congrats!!
I knew the Yamaha was the next bike I wanted just didn't realize it for the past six years.
I was wondering how your valve adjustment numbers fared over all these miles, like did they need shimming on your last check?

Congratulations Chris!

I see you had to get another blue one.

I've got a question that you certainly don't need to answer, but I'm sure we would all be fascinated to hear.

What was the trade-in value on a 130,000 mile motorcycle?

Curious to know this as well.

Nice to see you stayed with the Super Tenere.
It's been a while that I seen you post and I was wandering about you.

Did you sail the Atlantic this summer?

Thank you for the good wishes guys! Another Tenere was really the only appealing option out there. :) ::022::

Trade in value was $4000, which I thought was very reasonable. The new bike was $10995 at TriCounty Honda in Petersburg, WV.

Best,

Chris

I wish I had the chance to do the Atlantic this summer! We did get engaged on Ongoing Project in late June and had some really good sailing trips on the Chesapeake Bay, but nothing like I was planning for the summer originally. The autopilot and electronics interfaces have been wonky, and after 7 months of tinkering, the manufacturer and the dealer still haven't gotten the system working reliably enough to go offshore. :'(

With winter coming and the boat getting pulled out soon, will have to wait for further testing until spring. I'm still holding on to my hope to singlehand to Bermuda in June.

Best,

Chris

Don't even try to measure against Chris. You can't get your head around how he does it.

Hint: He isn't retired.
Yet, he'll work on Friday, then will be sighted in Dallas Texas on Saturday night. But he'll be at work Monday morning up in Yankeeland.

We're all snoring when Chris rides. Simply beyond my comprehension. Amazing.

I too traded in my 2012 for the 14. Wasn't really looking to do it, things just worked out to where it became possible to do it. Loved my 2012 but the 14 has many tangible improvements that make it even a more enjoyable ride than before. Never would have thought that possible til after the trade was done. This 2014 is going to be around for a long time...

Hi Chris -

That's a ton of miles in three years for any kind of vehicle, but especially a motorcycle. Do you mind sharing how you racked up so many miles? Purely recreation, commuting between home and vacation house, business, iron butt rallies?

A few more questions:

1. Was the bike starting to show its miles (burning oil, stuff breaking, etc) or was it just time for a new one?
2. Biggest complaint about the bike, and was it fixed or improved on the '14?
3. You must have worn out a ton of tires. What were your favorites (performance on and off road, in the rain, mileage/durability)?
4. Did you stay with the stock seat or go with something else?
5. What riding pants do you wear? Was it Rukka Armas top and bottom?

Hope you don't mind all the questions but you're kind of a lab rat around here!

Thanks,
Bob
