Trade up or expand the fleet?

I currently have a 2012 S10 with almost 40k miles. Been well maintained, highly farkled and treats me well. I also have an older BMW airhead for the days I just want to slow down. I recently sold another bike I was not riding much so got a few extra dollars in my pocket. Trying to decide if I should trade my S10 in for a newer model with cruise and less miles. As I get older I know that feature becomes more important. But I still would like a fun and lighter ride for sporty rides. Something simple and classic. Triumph Speed Twin comes to mind. I am not interested in putting something like a MCCruise on the S10 so not an option for me. I am really leaning towards the newer S10 so am I wrong to turn my back on the old girl? ;)

There is nothing wrong with a well maintained 2012. But if you want more comfort and got the cash considering a Gen2 ES would be a logic thing to do.

That also has an advantage for someone who wants to start riding an S10 but hasn’t got the cash for a newer one. They can buy your Gen1!

Good luck making a choice, keep us updated?

Stefan.

Good advice and agree with looking at other options. Now is not a great time to buy due to inventory but I do have a local dealer with a 2021 ES. The adjustable suspension also intrigues me. I sold the BCR because it became more of a looker than a rider, I hate getting older. But it beats the alternative..... :)

I agree with Stefan. I was going to suggest an ES if you were trading up. I absolutely love the E-suspension. I have a '17 ES, and apparently, it's the only one made perfect from the factory. I've had no problems, and, more importantly, wouldn't change a thing. . . . not a thing. She's my favorite bike ever.

I do love my S10. I would usually hold out for a refreshed unit, but looks like Yamaha is abandoning the S10 and FJR with Euro 5. That is what is really pushing me to a new 21 since it likely is the last year.

Question for the experts. I would look to transfer my side and top rack/cases (SW Mototec). I assume the racks and mounts transfer to the new model?

Same thoughts here. I have no intention at all to replace my S10. But might it be totaled or something than I would get the newest and most complete one I could get.

Or a T7… dang like that rally edition a lot

Edit: I assume it can all be transferred because I believe there a no differences. But I wouldn’t know 100% for sure, somebody will answer that one with certainty in a bit.

Yup. About the only thing that won't transfer is the little winglets; Gen I & II have different windshields. Everybody that has ridden/owned a Gen I, and then moved to a Gen II has described the Gen II as more refined, and improved.

As an old guy that has made the weird transition from a 2014ES Gen 2 to a 2013 Gen 1 I would have to say the gen 2 offers some nice upgrades that I miss. I rode the Gen 2 for two years and sold it for 1800 more than I paid for it....And then wished I had her back. A Goldwing, and Airhead and two V Twin lawnchairs later I found this immaculate Gen 1 with 3300 miles on her. Great price and wonderful bike that I will run the crap out of. I just love these S 10's!

I would expand the fleet if you can afford it and have the storage space. The Gen 2 has some improvements, but nothing really substantial as far as I'm concerned. Like you, I am getting older (just turned 65) and want to experience riding different bikes while I still can. I really enjoy having multiple bikes. (8 and counting). I have a 2013 S10 that has probably hit bottom on the resale value, like your 2012. You would probably have to pay $10,000 or more to trade up to a 2021. It's your money and your decision. Either way you can't lose.

Nope, go ahead, treat yourself to a new or newer S10 with CC
My 2018 ES model had CC.
I'm now riding a 2020 Africa Twin DCT model non adventure and it has CC.
The automatic transmission along with CC sealed the deal for me.

Magic you are pretty spot on. The +$10k to upgrade is what really led me to the question. It will be truly sad if Yamaha does indeed cancel the S10 for MY22. SHUMBA, I have a contact (prior BCR owner) that went to a AT for the DCT and loves it. I have not owned a chain bike in 15 years and not thrilled with the idea again on my main bike. But, if I do consider that I would also take a hard look at the new Tracer GT. But that instrument cluster is awful. Why did they not keep the TFT from the old model. Going to look at a new S10 and a used one on Saturday. Really like the black and gold look (like my GS ;)) of the new MY21. Wish the Triumph dealer had a Speed Twin in stock.

Yup, I miss the shaft drive.
However with a centre stand on my 2020 Africa Twin DCT chain cleaning lubing is easy do.
A bikes colour means absolutely nothing to me..and no, I'm not colour blind

I am thinking about buying a slightly used or new 2019 up Super Tenere ES. I’ve owned a blue 2012, white 2013, matte 2013, and my current red 2015 which has 56,000 miles on it. I am quite fond of my ‘15 but would like to own the late model ES as it might be my last heavy bike as I age. Plus, all of my accessories from the ‘15 will transfer right over. I tend to stick with what works for me…..owned three Honda ST1300s and nine KLRs in the past 30 years.

Love my 16 ES. It has been a wonderful bike. It does what I ask it to do- off road, two up, pack mule, mile muncher. I’ve got it set up for me and look forward to new adventures. Damn work is getting in the way.

Had the chance to look at a couple of options on Saturday. One was a BMW Urban GS at the new BMW dealer in Milwaukee. Nice bike but did not like the "sit on" feel vs sit in. Would not replace the S10 ever. Next visit was the Yamaha shop north of me about 1.5 hours. The 2021 S10 was sold that was advertised but not delivered yet. Good looking bike. Dealer had no idea if they were getting the ones still on order in or not. No idea if MY22 was still going to offer S10 or not. I guess the search continues.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Truly appreciate the input and really looking for an ES model now.

Any updates... keep your perfectly good S10 and buy a speed triple, you can always flog the latter easily if you get bored with it, then buy something else, etc, etc. Variety is the spice and all that

Went to the not so local Triumph dealer on the weekend. Liked the Speed Twin but sure felt small. The Street Triple actually felt better. Miss my triples. Plan on heading to the Yamaha dealer to talk about any chance of a new S10 but looks doubtful. They have a used 19' with 4500 miles for $16k!! Nope. But we can talk. My horn quit working on the S10, so maybe time to trade....
