TPS

Hi Folks. Been having loads of trouble with my S10 recently (see my other posts about stumbling/spluttering, high idle etc). Even my mechanic seems to be stuck for ideas and I cant do diagnostics because my console doesn't work.
One thing that several people have suggested is replacing the Throttle Position Sensor. Whilst I would be happy to pay the £150 for it if I KNEW it was the problem I would rather find an aftermarket one for less money. I see there are many listed on ebay for about £50 but, as usual, nothing for the S10.
So, my question to you good folk is...Does another Yamaha (maybe R1) share the same TPS as the S10?
Any advice gratefully received. Cheers!

Yes, the TPS is used on a lot of Yamahas.

Go to EBay or a salvage/breaker with this and you ought to come up with something.

For next time on how to do a search for other usages of any part:
Go to an online parts fiche, a.k.a. Illustrated Parts Catalog, and find the part you want.
Click on the part number and it'll give all the cross references, which is what I linked you to.

Good luck.

Wow...thanks everyone for ideas!
Tomatocity, it's a 2011 with about 74,000 miles on it.
Checkswrecks. Thank you, that is really helpful.

The TPS can be diagnosed pretty easily with a volt meter. Even easier if it has a graphing feature.

Did your issue start along about the time your dash quit by any chance? It's a part of the system that interfaces with a lot of other stuff, taking the dash out of the circuit may not have been the best thing. Your MAP sensor is probably more important to how well the bike runs. Even a faulty coolant sensor can screw things up. You really need your dash to ask the ecm what's happening.

Stu, does your dash work or not? Does the mech have the Yamaha softwear to properly work on the bike? TPS is one of the easest items to check. Has this bike been wrecked or have a lot of miles on it? Sounds like you need to take it into the dealer, spend the money and get it fixed.

Good Luck

Hi silvergoose. The bike is high miles but not as high as some on here. Its done 74,000
Im getting the TPS checked on Sunday. Software is kind of irelevant. The only way to do diagnostics (according to Yamaha uk) on a 2011 model is via the console and yes, you are correct, the console doesn't work...well, speedo does etc but not the left button which is required for diagnostics. Cheers

Hmm, wandering around Procaliber's fiche, listed under Intake 2 there are two TPS sensors, a Throttle Sensor and an Acceleration Sensor. They're visually identical, fastened to different parts of the TB assembly, one's $82, the other is $95. Their MAP, or Pressure Sensor is $74. A new dash is $555. I know getting stuff to the UK is tough though ($).

UK prices inc VAT =

£150($194) TPS 13S-85885-00
£135($175) APS 13S-85884-00

Buying second hand may not be such a good idea.

A lot of money for simple potentiometers.

If a member in NA could help out by buying them for you, the postage is no more than £10. "Limey" (great guy) a member in Ontario shipped me the two standard engine sliders for less than that.

Regarding the instrument cluster, I have looked at some photos placed on here by other members of the PCB inside the unit and from my experience with PCB design I would guess the switch in question connects a pin on the microchip to 0V(GND) and it seems to me a worthwhile check to see which pin of the microchip it is.
When Stu comes over and if we get time I could find out which pin it is on my working cluster and then see if it is connected on his.

That's the UK for you, also known as 'Rip Off Britain' to the natives or in the '90's it was known as the Emerald Island (not Ireland) because anyone selling into the UK was making a huge mark up, then block exemption kicked in and things dropped a little. The only way is for a member in the UK to buy something online, have it sent to a US member who then forwards it as a NCV (no commercial value, gift ) to the UK member, thus eliminating the import duty, VAT and handling charges.....

Thanks again folks. If I need a new TPS Nissbird Im tempted to buy an R1 one, which thanks to checkswrecks I now know is the same. Thats the thing that really bugs me in the UK is identical parts fir an R1 are cheaper than the S10 (unless I've made a mistake). Im sure I found an R1 TPS online for £80

The present day R1 and XT1200 use the same part numbers for the TPS and APS, however I think you are quoting the price of a TPS used on earlier models of the R1 which I think is a 3 pin device not a 4 pin.
