Touring bike or Porsche?

I love my Yamaha Super Tenere. For my present situation, it's the perfect motorcycle. I've owned 20+ motorcycles in the last decade. I've pretty much had one of everything. The Super Tenere is not as comfortable for my lovely wife as some other bikes we've owned, so I have been thinking of buying a second pure touring motorcycle. At present, either the BMW R1200RT liquid cooled or 1600GT seem to be at the top of my list. There are other considerations too.

But this weekend, I got the opportunity to test drive a used Porsche Boxster S. My wife & I loved it! Cruising around town with the top down was fantastic. Press a button, put the top up, & take it out on the open highway it was very comfortable to drive and extremely fast. It cornered like it was on a steel rail. With the front & rear trunks it has a ton of storage compared to a motorcycle. Plus, it can be driven year round.

So, now we're pondering. Spend $25,000 on a real comfortable cruising bike or...$40,000 on used Porsche.

Anyone picked up a true sports car instead of a motorcycle? :-\

I'm on my 3rd Porsche and think they're great cars. My first was a 911 Cab (convertible). I got rid of it when I realized that every time the weather was perfect for having the top down I would take my bike out instead. I'm not sure how the weather is in Central WA but here in Texas there's a pretty short window where having the top down is all that great. I can tell you that you'll miss you're bike tremendously.

How about an FJR and a Miata and have the best of both worlds? Or an FJR and a Boxster Non-S. The Non-S is still very nice and unless you're going to track the car you'll not miss the power and upgraded brakes all that much.

Well first off, the S-10 is never going to leave my garage. For my solo riding it's perfect. When we travel & pull our travel trailer, the S-10 is perfect in the back of my pickup. When we get the trailer set-up I unload the S-10 & we use it to explore.

I've put 30,000+ miles on a 2005 FJR & loved the bike. But a Miata doesn't compare to a Boxster S in my opinion.

This Boxster S I'm looking is a two-owner car. I know the second owner & he took great care of the car.

I'm making an offer on the Boxster tomorrow & we'll see what happens.

I've been a Porsche lover forever but never owned one, for a variety of reasons. Always planned on a 911, but lately the Cayman would be my first choice. Boxsters are great, but I personally would not buy a convertible, and I live in San Diego!. My motorcycle is my convertible, so I don't need that in a car. That said, I love your plan! A Boxster vs. a 2-up tourer sounds like a great option. I bet you'll have a blast with it.

I just sold my 911 C2S three months ago, and bought an adventure bike. I hope all goes well, my S10 should be in by next week.

Ok, I misunderstood. I thought it was a one or the other selection you were making. And I agree, the Boxster S is a great car. Good luck and enjoy!

Hmmm. Tough choice! I have long coveted a K1600 GT as a pure touring bike, but a Boxter is a really nice weekend car.
I think I would get the Boxter as the more practical choice. You can always add more farkles to the S10 to make it more comfy for the wife!

I think your plan is brilliant! An S10 and a Boxster sharing space in your garage? Doesn't get much better than that! ::012::

There are alot of touring options, Goldwing, HD Ultra, Victory Cross Country, BMW R1200RT/K1600GTL, etc.

I have a Goldwing (1800) for long rides and a Suzuki 1250FA for communting/short rides/teaching. I will be trading in the 1250FA for a 2014 S10 ES, as it is a much more comfortable bike for me.

If you are torn between a convertible and a motorcyle do what i did and buy a honda S2000. Its a motorcyle on 4 wheels, light agile, corners well and redlines at. 9200 rpm. One of the best road machines ever built.

I have both a Porsche Boxster S and a Tenere....there is no passenger seat on the Tenere....but a great one in the Porsche.

One thing; make sure you do (or it has been done) the factory intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing replacement. The early models had a habit of breaking around 50 to 60 K....if ti breaks you need a new engine. Replacing before it breaks only costs around $1K...well worth the cost.

I'd get the Porsche. The wife will be happier and more comfortable in the long run. And that means you get more honey on your biscuit.

Thanks for the advise. This is a 2007 model with 37,000 miles would the IMS still be a concern? I'm still negotiating on the Porsche. We are around $3,000.00 apart & I'm a stubborn Dane!

I think by 2007 Porsche had corrected the IMS problem (it was significant enough Porsche fixed failures under warranty, even after the warranty period).

If you haven't already, check out this forum; http://986forum.com/forums/

Lots of good info from Boxster owners.

I love mine; 2000 with 9,000 miles....looks like it just came off the showroom floor.

I'd go with what makes the lady happy if you can afford multiple.

As far as bikes, I've been surprised by the different criteria women have for the back seat on a bike. Mine actually doesn't like the Goldwing/HD Barcolounger back seats and prefers the flat Super Tenere seat with a top box. I certainly know plenty of women who only want the Barcolounger with cup holders.

While you couldn't give me a 1200RT, the smoothness and power of the 1600 are great. It's like the big brother to the FJR. Just remember to dedicate space in the luggage for the spare water pump.
