Tourances suck in loose dirt...Touratech adjustable windshield mount - ugh...

Since it's over 70F out here in the desert today, no wind, just beautiful decided to take the ST out for a bit of jeep trails in Mojave desert. I got into a bit of loose dirt...and remembered how the Tourance EXP's SUCK in loose dirt. Need to replace them soon, but don't want to loose any street-ability as I am going to be hitting alot of slab back-and-forth to Oregon this summer (800 miles one-way), but will be doing coastal jeep trails when I'm in Oregon.

So....K60's, Anakee 2 's, Shinko 705's, Dunlop TR 91's or.....

Since I mounted the Touratech adjustable windshield mount...I can't keep the 4 adjusting bolts tight off-road, no matter how tight I get them. Guess it's Loctite time...but that kind of defeats the adjustability aspect of the mount.. Spent 30 minutes this afternoon looking for the 4 bits (found 3) when one let loose this afternoon.

Too bad about the TT bracket, I was looking in to these. Still a little blue loctite and you shouldn't have any more problems. You'll still be able to adjust it without tools or anything and the loctite will still set up again when you loosen/retighten. I use this stuff everyday at work. Hell, the low strength purple stuff will probably work also.

Other than that, how do you like the TT bracket?

Yep either Loctite, lock-washers and/or better knobs will fix it. Just aggravating. No problem on the street, just when it gets rough off-road (although some of our so-called 'paved' streets in town are rougher than alot of jeep trails!).

I bought the TT mount mainly as a place to mount my Zumo, but it works well. Very adjustable, although you have 4 knobs instead of 2 with Greg's (Wasp's) bracket. It's well made and very stealth. No big and clunky like some I have seen.

I liked the K60 rear, but after 3500 miles I pulled it off, as I was just running the streets. Then met a guy and we down a pipeline, me on my PR2, mostly small rocks in light mud, so no problem. The K60 probably is about half or less done, don't know when I will put it back on.

Steve, you may want to try Vibra-Tite VC3. You put this on and wait for it to dry before putting the screw on. It will do a little adjustment and still work. Pretty good stuff.

Just put the shinko 705 on my klr and went to Big Bend and it was the worst it ever handle in lite sand, gravel and rock it was good.

My TT mount did the same so I initially got longer screws, blue loctited, and added a backing but. I have since gone to the knurled knob available through Cal-Sci, loctited them as well, and have had no problems what so ever.

As for tires, I would go K60. I haven't spooned them on yet but plan to after burning up my Karoo after my Death Valley trip. (Organizer of the event mandating as dedicated a knobbies as possible).

I ran K60s on my F8GS and had 9200 miles on them when BMW bought the bike back under lemon law. Multi state slab, off road, canyon, etc. and I was never let down whether it was dry, wet, etc. I guesstimate that they had another 1000 - 1500 miles left on them.

It's not just off road Steve, there crap on the road too. I swapped mine for lock nuts on way to Colditz as screen kept folding back on me on the autobahn at anything over 70mph (110kmh). ::007::

But on the Super Ten, the Shenkos are a huge improvement off road over the Tourances.

Lost one of my bolts as well. I've replaced all the 6mm bolts with 1/4" stainless carriage bolts, larger knurled knobs, and some nifty rubber and metal laminate washers on both sides. No slippage now up to 85 indicated.

I had a set of Shinko 705s on my Wee Strom. I had a couple thousand miles on them, and I liked them pretty well. The big difference I noticed over the Anakees was that they turn in faster than the Anakees. I wouldn't expect the same mileage, but then again they only cost half as much.

Let me throw in my 2 cents.

I did a back to back comparison with my DR 650 equipped with Kenda K270's (front & rear) and my Super Tenere equipped with Shinko 705's (front & rear). This test ride was the first time I road the new ST off pavement and was curious how well it would handle on graded gravel. Sorta like riding on small marbles and a bit loose in the curves. Same road, same temperature, same day.
The bigger ST felt better than the smaller DR and I was able to manage 50 mph pretty comfortably. The DR @ 40-45 was about as fast as this old man was willing to do. Then standing on the pegs of both bikes the Super Tenere really had the advantage over the smaller lighter DR.

Was it the tires that made the difference or the weight of the bigger bike? I do not know. All I do know is I am a fan of both machines. Man,,, it's nice nice having two different bikes for two completely different riding experiences. ::008::

I will be finding out soon how well the 705's handle desert track. I'll be a bit cautious and see if my experience is similar to Mike B's.

My Tourance rear is about toast at 3500 miles and the front is around 60% gone in the center. I was not that happy with them in a little softer stuff.

I am going with the K60 (from Tobasco) on the rear and a Shinko 705 on the front. I am going to put about another 200-300on the stock ones before I change them but it will be hard to do with the new ones looking at me each time I go into the shop. ::025::

Don't know if I've ever come across those. I'll have to take a closer look when I make my next run to the hardware store.

They're called bonded sealing washers apparently. http://www.bestmaterials.com/sealing_washer.aspx I was just looking for a rubber washer that I knew would stop the slippage, found these instead.
