Right now I own a 2013 White S10 that I absolutely love. My son is a senior this year and has basically taken my bike over. I'd love to buy another one so the 2 of us can do some trips together. I have kinda decided i'd really like a bike with electronic cruise but the prices for another 2013 are so enticing that I'm wondering if I'd regret buying another 2013? I've seen some pretty farkled out 2013's for under $9k. I wouldn't be able to even touch that for a 2014 or newer with all the stuff these 2013 have. I've never ridden a 2014 so I really don't know what I would be missing but here they are great. I've just told myself that I want the Electric cruise and E Suspension. But like I said the prices for these 2013's are pretty sweet. I even saw one for $7900 with a Rostra Cruise which is basically an electronic cruise. So those of you who have ridden both what do you think? Also my son can't afford his own so that's not an option of making him buy one. I want some Father and Son riding time and think this would be a great way to go. When he decides to move out on his own I will give him the option to buy one of them Cheap or I will just sell it. It's not gonna be a gift for him at this point..

If he has a job, have him sort of make a little something of a monthly payment on your Ten then get a 14 all the upgrades as I understand started that year (Clutch basket, a little less neutering on the ECU than the early models).
By next late spring the 14's should be a better bargain.
Strictly my opinion I am not you.
Having one make some payment as when my folks bought me my first car I had a little more pride connection to it when they made me make small payments on it.

From someone who has owned both a 2012 and a 2014, I would suggest an upgrade. Let your son have the 2013 and you get yourself a 2014/15 ES. You won't regret it because of the things they have done to the 14/15 models. Much improved.

I ride both regularly...they are both parked in my barn.

You know what you're getting if you buy another '13. It is a fantastic bike, period. The '14 is noticeably better in a number of little ways that add up to make it worthwhile.

It has taken me a lot of years to finally learn to buy what I really want the first time. It's always more cost effective. So buy what you really want, which ever bike that may be. You won't regret it.

You mention telling yourself you want the E suspension. If that's the case your decision is made, will have to get the 2014. I believe that's the first year that option was offered. That along with all the other improvements, it would be a no brainer. See if you can get your son to pay you the difference for the current bike to make the financial leap to the '14. That would still be a good deal for him and it would mitigate the cost difference for you.

I did not own a 2013, just took one for a test ride, not really enough to get a full sense of the 2014 improvements, but I did notice the 14 a little smoother and a little snappier. But, the one feature that sold me was the cruise. I could have bought either, and if I was really frugal, the 13 and an ecu flash would have served me really well. But, the one feature I use all the time and love is the cruise. Also, my wife has breast cancer(good prognosis though) and it has reminded me that no one lives forever, and for a couple grand, I bought the 14 and don't regret it. I love the bike, and did I mention the cruise? If you have paid your bills, saved for retirement, and love to ride...it's a no brainier.

I think you are all right. I already have the 13 so really no reason to buy another. Besides more than likely I would buy the 13 wishing the entire time I would have bought the 14-16 bike with ESA and Cruise and never been happy. So I'll wait and find me a nice used 14 or 15. I'm not in a hurry. I figure I have until April or May before I need to take the plunge unless a deal comes by I can't pass on. Thanks for your thoughts.

Getting your son to make payments on your old bike while you upgrade is the way to go.
Teaches him some responsibility and you get that riding time together.
You should get the ES ::018::

This. Bikes are expensive and loose value with each passing day. The way to get ahead is to buy the one you like and keep it. They are both great bikes but the Gen Two has some worthwhile improvements including cruise, the best I have ever used. There are some great deals on those too, you'll find one.

PS: I also keep mine in the barn tho when the snow hits, this is the one I tend to bring out:

I bought the 13 because of the white, but I wish I had the cruise like the 14.
That's what I did, I love the white and red, it reminds me of my YZ when I used to race motocross. However last week that bike and myself got punted down the road by an inattentive driver. I won't know for a few days if the bike is totaled or not, if not then no problem, her insurance will repair it, if it is then I'll have to get another one. Much as I love the '13 I think I'll go with a '14 for the heated grips, cruise and ES if I can find one.

Welcome, you won't regret your decision.
The motorcycling press paints a rather bleak picture of the S-ten from everything I have seen

I have seen words like "sluggish", "subdued", and "workmanlike" used to describe the super tenere, and I am pretty worried that I will not like the bike, or that I will find it so tedious that I will need to dump a load of money into squeaking out a few more HP. But it was a great deal and hopefully I won't dislike it. My primary bike at the moment if a first generation DL1000 (which is also no ball of fire) so maybe the super tenere will seem about right.

It does look like the ECU flash is really necessary to get the bike to run as it should . I need to find out the best place to have that done!

I don't think you're going to be disappointed, the S 10 is an excellent all-rounder and a screaming deal for what you get. The only reason I'd go for the '14 is for the heated grips.

The heated grips currently on my strom will be going on the S-ten for sure, I ride all year and man, my hands would be frozen without the heated grips
