Progressive insurance totaled my bike sight unseen after explaining that I had hit a deer at 55+ MPH.

What should I replace it with? KTM 1190, Triumph 1200 Explorer or another Tenere?
OK everyone says replace it with a Tenere. Who would have thunk that would be the answer on a Tenere Forum. I made the Tenere decision once but that was before the KTM 1190 come out with all that horse power and rugged good looks. The Triumph I feel is too similar to my FJR and maybe a little too top heavy. I have not given this any prior thought as I was expecting to keep the Tenere for a long time and that is coming from a guy that has had 8 different bikes it the last 8 years.

What are the reasons you guys would not by a KTM over a Tenere?

Glad you asked that question! For me, it comes down to reliability and dealer network. After some nasty experiences with my Moto Guzzi Stelvio a year ago, I am done with uber cool exotic machines with a sketchy dealer network and a questionable reliability record. KTMs are also chain driven, and for me, that by itself would be a deal breaker. Yamaha has a huge, well sorted dealer network throughout North America, and although KTM may be a relatively reliable bike, as far as European machines go, try and find a KTM dealer in Upper Rubber Boot, Saskatchewan if something does go wrong. In the end, I just don't think you can top Yamaha reliability. ::022:: YMMV.

KTMs fuel pumps, water pumps, air box, chain drive, sparse dealer network, waiting for weeks for parts thats enough for me.

Hit the nail dead square BravoBravo. Those are all reasons why I bought the Tenere in the first place. I also forgot about the chain drive. My local Yamaha dealer is also a KTM dealer but the dealer network is obviously weak compared to Yamaha.

If you decide on a Tenere make sure it is a 2014 Yamaha Super Tenere. The engine improvements alone should be worth the additional dollars.

Why a Yamaha vs KTM? Dependability on the road, dealership support in the USA, cost,...

Thanks for the information about the 14 Tenere. I have been looking at some 12 and 13 holdovers to save some cash. I will have to look into the 14s improvements but I guess I thought my 12 was perfect. I just traded my 13 FJR for a 14 FJR ES and the ES is cool but I think I could do without it on a Tenere although it probably makes more sense on a Tenere with the varied surfaces it can travel.

I think I have made a decision on a replacement bike. I can get a 2013 Tenere for $11,600 with a two year warranty, and $1,200 worth of Yamaha accessories for free. The added benefit is my PIAA lights, heated grips, GPS mount, Touring windshield, and side wings, Kako throttle lock and top box will fit it.

Do you mean $1200 in accessories?!?!?!?!

If you really meant $12,000 then I want to know where that dealer is.
Yep $1200.00. I just had a head injury Sunday so you will have to cut me a little slack. :D

... dollar wise the '13 is a great purchase.
... you can also buy more warranty for $100 per year up to three additional years.

... the '13 does not have the engine improvement: Cam Chain Tensioner, Clutch Basket, Re-mapped ECU, Cylinder, Piston, Rings, Head, Valves, Improved exhaust, and some things I don't remember.
... also: new aluminum sidestand, added right side cover, new triple tree, new handlebars, added protective plate below the head light, new seat covering, new LED turn signals, new dash, added tech bar, new windshield, added cruise control, added heated grips, and a few things I don't remember.

Your killing me man! I just traded up my one year old FJR three weeks ago so I am trying to save some money. I haven't been following along to know that they had made that many improvements!

Just found out why there are not many 2014 Super Tenere Standard's. Dollar wise the 2013 Super Tenere is a very good deal for the buyer and the dealership. Guessing the dealership makes more money on the 2013 than it does on the 2014 Standard. Anyway many dealerships are not ordering the 2014 Standard because it would take away from the 2013 sales.

Glad you are OK. Hitting a deer at speed is quite an experience. I smoked one @ 70 MPH on my ST1100, fortunately stayed up, but walked funny for many months after. ATGATT!!

Glad you are ok. Make sure you take it easy for a while, those subdural hematomas can actually get worse. Any neurological changes or increased head aches should be looked into quickly.
My vote 2014...

Jeez dude, sorry to hear about your mishap. I live in KY within a few miles of a deer infested WMA. My wife and I both have taken deer out with our cars. I have come close to hitting them on my bikes a few times. From October to the end of December I do not ride at dawn and dusk and have never been much of a night rider.

I have been doing my part to reduce the deer numbers as I like to kill them with rifles and serve them up with gravy. But, I think they are out to get me now.

To any non hunters. October thru December....and especially November is what is termed the "rut". The prime time for deer mating. Bucks will be chasing does and either sex will run across highways without looking or caring about us two legged animals. I will see a deer strike darn near every morning during this mating season.
