Dose anyone run tire sealant? Ride-on, slime, quadboss, honda or any other kind of sealant on your S-10 tires...if so; Please share your opinion/feedback.

I've used Ride-On in the past with good results on my ST1300, KLR 650, F800GS, and VStrom. I like the fact that it balances the tires as well as sealing them in the event of a puncture; airing down the tires is best done with the valve stems at the 1-3 o'clock position... :D When it came time to change tires/tubes I always gave the techs a heads up - never had a complaint.

I used it as a sealant on my KLR. Did a test with my Metzler balancer and proved to myself that it does nothing to balance the tire.

Used puncturesafe before, was fine until about 145 mph at which point the front end felt like a Jack Hammer.

A mate of mine swears by it, I guess he never went as fast, although I can't see it being such an issue on the Tenere.

I own a bicycle store so use "Stans" in my S10
not sure if it works as I've never had a flat in 28k
BUT it does balance!! I tested it with mY Tenere balancer ::025::
We4nt from a very vibby worn K60 to a dead smooth 70mph machine
http://www.notubes.com/ try it ::020:: works for me ::021::

Interesting . I have and will not use sealant though. Carry a repair kit with sticky strings.
I mount my own tires and use Dyna Beads for balance so i don't want to mess that up.

I used Dyna Beads on my last bike, a Suzuki V Strom 650 and loved them. I took off the balance weights and all was great. I thought about putting them in when I got my new Super Tenere but didn't and still have not and at 3500 miles I'm not sure I'm going to need them as I get little to no vibration. I suppose maybe it could be smoother but all looks great. The Dyna B's are very re-usable although some do get away :)
I have always been a "sticky strings" user. They are just so easy but I suppose the down side is that with the sealant, in theory, the leak is stopped before much air is lost.

I've used Tyreshield without much luck.

The first application was with the Metzlers. I was very careful to purge my air tank and used a dessicant filter, for moisture, when I aired it up. When I changed the tires last month it was obvious that the Tyreshield had failed because I had two globs of rubber in the bottom of the tires( this is described as a common problem when there is moisture in the tire).

I tried it one more time with my new set of tires. I got a screw (after 300 miles) in the rear tire and still had the air leak out. When I pulled the tire off, I could tell that the Tyreshield had spread and adhered properly in the tire but still had not stopped the leak.

I think I'm done with it. I'll use the sticky worm plugs and radial patches in the future.

I am realizing I have a very slow leak in my front tire. I would love to know any thoughts about the pro's and con's of using sealents if there are any.

Pro's: Did not prevent me from using a sticky cord to repair the nail hole that Ride-On failed to seal.
Con's: Expensive, doesn't work

I got a nail in the brand new rear tire of my ST1300 on the way home from having fresh tires installed. I patched the hole with a mushroom plug, added the correct amount of RideOn, and put somewhat over 15k miles on the tires with no problems. YMMV. ;)

Now that's good and bad to hear Chris.
I got a small screw in front tire (original tire) with almost 4000 miles on it. Plugged with rope but found out soon it was still leaking a couple pounds every three days. I have never had any plugs leak in the past - all five or six of them .... I am going to Slime it.
A question could be is it OK to re-plug a plug-?
I really want to put on a set of Heidenau K60's and was thinking I could store these perhaps. I have contacted Tabasco already.

Another thought is about "fixing" front tires vs. rear. Is it safe to fix the front tire-? Is it playing with the odds. The m/c service shop I use won't fix front tires due to liability and it seemed to make sense to me. I am wondering if anybody has had bad experiences with plugs-? This should probably be in another thread .... ?

I've been used a water-soluble product called Amerseal for several years. I've used it in all types and sizes of tires from low pressure lawn mower tires to semi truck tires. And yes, I run it in the S10 tires as well. Because the product is water based, it can be rinsed out and washed with soap and water so that you can still apply an inside patch if desired.

It works on tube and tubeless tires. A blackberry thorn got my new tire and tube on an XR650L that I used to own. Once I found the thorn, I pulled it out, added the Amerseal and rode the bike for 0.25 mile and then parked it for 2 weeks. It never lost any air pressure during that time. I was convinced.

It saves me a lot of time and money with trailer tires in my normal everyday business operations. I purchase this by the 5 gallon pail but it is available by the quart or gallon at Rural King. I've also had good luck with it in the ST1300, the XR's, the Wee and the Tenere.

Good stuff. ::008::

\I have around a years experience using tyreshield on my Ducati. I think the stuff delaminated from my tire because now my front end feels like a jackhammer at freeway speeds. Will never put the stuff in any tire ever again. Throwing the tire away tomorrow. Do not use Tyre Shield/Tyre Guardian period!

DT,

I haven't had to re-plug a plug, but I can't see a whole lot of harm in doing it - seems like you'd basically be starting from scratch. There are a bunch of folks who aren't too keen on plugs - I totally understand that - I've been fortunate in only needing to plug rear tires so far and have had good experiences with them. If you are planning on mounting K60s, perhaps a regular tire shop can take a look at your front tire and see what they think. The independent tire shop down the street from my house has been pretty helpful in that regard. Having a front go flat very quickly while riding could get ugly...

Hey Chris,
I am going to do just that - have them look at it.
I kinda thought the same about re-plugging but had never tried to pull one out. It was such a slow leak and the Slime got it.
I may just ride out the tiresand wait on the Scouts until spring using the more road tire for the wet weather here - that is if we even get any rain. I have read the K60's do very well in the wet with the newer center strip. Now I just need to convince myself of what I just wrote because I really want to try the Scout's off road-!! :) .
Thanks for your thoughts.

I would say the same about Slime products. They are ammonia based and they eat away at the interior of the tire and cause severe corrosion on non-painted surfaces (eats away at the rims from what I've experienced). My experience is that Slime causes more problems that it has ever solved, for me.

Once I tried the water based Amerseal, I found something that worked for me and solved more problems than it created. The only time it did not work was on my ST1300 when I got a puncture on the interstate and I fought to keep air in the tire with plugs AND sealant for a 600 mile ride of frustration. Long and short of it: what I use has saved me lots of time and frustration fixing known leaks and who knows how many others that went undetected. I will continue to use it.
