Tire observations, so far....

I'm coming up on the need to replace my rear tire and was idly musing on the tire life that I've had so far. My S10 is used for commuting mostly, and the bike's odo shows 17.5K miles.

1) OEM BW's - replaced F/R at 4.5K miles; the rear was squared off but had 1K-2K left in it, while the front was badly cupped. I replaced both as a set despite the fact that I could probably have nursed 6K from the rear - I had a 1400 mile highway run in front of me and didn't want to run out of rear tire, and the front tire felt really wonky from cupping. The front cupping started early, and I never warmed up to these tires as a result - I really just wanted them off the bike.

2) Metzeler Tourance - replaced F/R at 7K miles; rear was down to wear bars and squared off, front was mildly cupped but had 2K or better left in it. Replaced as a set because I wanted to try the street-only Michelin Pilot Road 4 Trail. I hoped for better mileage than 7K out of the rear but overall performance for my needs was fine.

3) Michelin Pilot Road 4 Trail - at 6K so far on the set, the rear is down to the wear bars (not squared off, tho) and the front looks quite good - it may hit 12K miles with ease. I've worn these tires to the edges, and other than thumping badly over botts dots and the unexpectedly short rear tire life, they have performed pretty much in line with expectations.

I'm debating just replacing the rear tire only; dunno if I'll stay with the Michelin or try to find a complementary street oriented rear from another manufacturer.

Your experience with the Michelin's matches my experience with my Road Star on every brand I tried. 2x Rear tire for every front tire. I always replaced the rear in kind. Tried Metzler and Conti and usually got 7-8 k rear and 15-16k front. So far I am at 6k on the OEM BWs on the S10.

First rule when discussing tire wear... list tire pressures used.

Second rule is to list the where and how you ride.

Third rule is to list the gear you haul or not.

This information helps reduce the twenty thousands questions :)

Were your original tires Bridgestone BattleWing 501/502E?

The Tourance was known to cup more than the Battlewing but most of both was caused from under inflation.

I find that low rear tire pressure causes more wear... but that is me. I usually got 8,000 miles out of the rear tire and I usually run 41-42 ft lbs.

The front tire wear results vary more than the rear tire results. I usually run 35-36 ft lbs. Some times I get twice the mileage of the rear tire and some times not. Have had many sets of BW 501/502E. Used up a front BW 501 in 9,000 miles by running 32 ft lbs (also serious cupping).

Currently have a set of Bridgestone Battlax A40 and they are starting to show wear at 5,657 miles (6+ months). I like these tires and have ridden them hard on narrow twisty rough roads as well as boring I-5. Have scrubbed the nubs off the front tire but don't have the skills to get rid of the last rear tire nubs. These tire lean over and hold the road very well. I was hoping to get 10,000 miles out of the rear... wait and see.

The A40's will be replaced with a set of previously (never mounted) Mitas e07. Hear good things about the Mitas e07.

My bike is about 95% on road and used for commuting every day. I have found the Tourance Next to be utterly brilliant. Handles well, doesn't get flustered by the rain and so far, the rear has about 5K on it with loads of tread left.
