It is almost time to change my tires for the first time on my S10. I am thinking about replacing the stock Bridgestone with Anekee III .I will be starting a 12 week (July1 to Sept 18) tour from Portland to Alaska and around the Rockies to Wisconsin and then back to Portland. We are planning about 80/20 dirt and off road on this trip. Is the Anekee the right tire for this type of riding? Also how many miles could I expect from these as I need to plan a tire change along the way. Any feedback would be appeciated

Doesn't seem right we don't provide the quality choice of rental bikes that you guys offer in Melbourne. It was so easy to just hop a 747 and rent almost any bike I could imagine.

Of course I rented the Tenere. :)

I've been watching the BMW forums and haven't seen anybody wear out a set yet, let alone enough to say how many miles they are good for. It would also depend on your right hand.


That said, by going up to Alaska first, when they do wear out you ought to be where you have options.

any reason for that particular tire? Alaska will have a fair bit of crap roads, maybe a mitas dakar, or heidi k60 might work better. but that's just me.
From my last road going tires (metzeler tourance, battleaxe) I averaged about 10-13xxx KM out of the rear tires. My Rear shinko 705 (radial) lasted 8500KM, but i'm not exactly easy on tires ::001::

Another inmate, Justbob, walked me through putting a pair of A3's on my bike, last Tuesday. I too, had the Battlewings and got about 9500 mi out of them, with chunk of those miles on gravel roads, fire roads and an unfortunate stint down a goat trail, last summer. They did just fine and I suspect the A3's would do as we'll, provided there's little mud or sand in your path.

Obviously I can't comment on their lifespan yet, but I'm apparently easy on tires. Justbob only got 6500 mi out of the Battlwings. Probably because his front wheel spends more time in the air than mine. 8)

The biggest difference I noticed between A3's and the BW's is handling. The A3's turn in effortlessly compared to the wooden, slow to turn in feel, I got from the BW's. Night and day difference. I haven't put enough miles on the A3's to know wether this will be a benefit or a detriment to my riding. I've gotten used to a certain amount of lean and counter steering and I'll need to adjust all that to match the A3's.

Thanks for the feedback, the anakee III was recomended by several dealers in my area when I told them of my trip intentions. I have gotten over 9000 km on my battlewings on both fire tracks, dirt and pavement but not so impressed with the traction. I am not planning on too much extreme riding while on our trip as I will be riding two up and was told the A3 may provide more tracton both on road and off. Thanks again for the feedback.

The Anakee IIIs are too new for any real mileage feedback. How far up into Alaska are you planning to go? If beyond Fairbanks, I'd be tempted to go with the Anakee IIs over the IIIs, or the K60 Scouts. If you're not going to try and make Prudhoe Bay or Inivuk, almost anything should be fine.

It's only 1200 miles from Portland to Alaska, (Hyder). BTDT many times. Depending on how you ride and where you go, you'll probably be ok with most tire choices. How many miles did you get from the Bridgestones?

This is true. I'd imagine as long there's not heavy rains during or preceding you would indeed be fine on any tire. A good friend did Prudo Bay last summer on his HD Softail Classic with whatever tires are stock on that bike. Got a little tense on one hill, but he made it all the same. Had ridden up there from Vegas and back down on same set of tires.

I have no idea who this is - the message is about weather and tires and those aren't K60s.
If it gets muddy, most everybody will get stuck, including the Super Tenere due to front fender.



btw - Initial reports are that the A3 does slightly better than the A2 in mud. Neither will keep up in mud with to the more aggressive tread of the K60, TKC, or other tires with true knobs.

And that's the thing, if you hit calcium chloride, it gets nasty, muddy and will build up mud all over quickly. They put this on the roads every year in the summer as part of the road stabilizing program. To a degree, the haul road is simply about luck, as to the conditions/weather you encounter. I raised my fender 2" in anticipation of going to AK and possibly doing the Haul Rd.

But, the OP hasn't said if they intend to go there. If they are just going to Fairbanks or lower, it's not an issue. They may encounter road construction and mud, but not along the same lines as the Haul or Dempster.
