Tilt Kill Switch ?

OK, here is a weird question, but there is logic behind it . . . I am thinking solo to the Arctic Circle next summer (unless I can talk Snake or Snakebitten to go with me -hint-hint ;-) and am worried about the bike falling over and how to get it up, by myself, the bike, that is . . . . ;-) One of you at the rally talked about an "Air Bag Jack". . . Doing some research, they are not horribly expensive, weight about 7ish to 9 pounds, with a hose to use your exaust to fill the bag to get the bike up high enough to get it back on the stand. . . My brother asked me if there was a kill switch on the bike to turn the engine off, if it's on its side? Good question . . . My VStrom 650 evidently has one . . .

So a long intro for a short question, is there a tilt kill switch on the beast, and if so, can you bypass it? Or would you want to? Any other ideas out there? My biggest fear being single ship, is a tip over and I have a 62 year old back and am not built like Carson ;-) They have X-Jack Exaust that also has a pump you plug into the battery. . . but running your battery down is scary also . . .

Any thoughts . . .? Luke

Yep, the tip over sensor is under the rear hidden cargo rack, the one under the passenger seat. Although it didn't kill my bike when I went over in Vegas, I hit the kill button after a few seconds went by.
The main problem, by my experience, is getting out from under the machine if pinned. An airbag could do it, if everything is right there handy to do it. A run down battery is the least of the problems. As odd and clunky seeming as it was, I liked that ratcheting mechanical lift that was posted here a while back. All the parts could maybe be made to be handy, tank bag maybe, it will get a leg clear, but also can get a bike near vertical again. I don't think an air bag will do more than a few inches. They're very powerful, but they're not meant to do a high lift as needed to upright a bike.
Wish I could put the time together, I'd go with you to Alaska.

Ha! www.dustriders.co.za make that lift. It's listed under 'comfort' for some reason.

I've dumped my S10 a couple of times and it never shut off by itself but it was never a problem. Just reached over and turned the key off. As for lifting it yourself. You may be surprised. I can do it and I'm turning 69 soon. I found my S10 lighter to get off the ground than my pals Triumph 800. For a bike that's supposed to be 100lbs lighter it must be very top heavy cause it took 2 of us to lift the Triumph. Maybe get a blanket and lay your S10 down on the lawn and try it. You may be surprised with the right technic.

I've read somewhere the best way to pick up a heavy bike is with your back to it and 'walk' it up. It's supposedly the best way to get a Goldthing of the floor. I find if I've dropped my bike I can right it with one arm in temper...

With Panniers and back to the bike method I've been able to lift my bike pretty easily... of course I hate to admit I've done it numerous times... :-[

Thanks Friends!!!! Don, I wish you could go too!!! All good ideas, I tend to pack heavy :-( but the jack thing sounds interesting. My brother Snake hurt his back trying to lift the beast, even when he was steamed!!! I'll look for the kill switch, just to know where it is anyway. Also, Snake saw a modified human crutch some guy had on another bike for a kickstand? Snake thought it might be a good thing to have for those of us who's bikes stand too vertical on the side stand. Put it somehow on the non-side-stand side to not let it tip that way. I'm finding these are all problems for us short legged people who have lowered our bikes so we reach the ground. Mine will only go on the center stand with 2 people lifting it, specially with the Jesse bags on it. Someone at the rally also had the great idea to drive the back wheel up on a small 2x4 in the garage. . . Works like a charm!!!!

Well, thanks for all the info . . I'm going to go look to see that kill switch and take a google cruise for the jack thing. Going to 68 degrees here today . . . Eat your hearts out back east boys!!!! ;-) Luke

Tabasco can shorten the bits as easily as he lengthened my side stand. I think there was a shortened side stand and links in the For Sale folder a little bit ago. You've got the links already...
I just bumped it to the top. $100.

Google Skert method and you should quickly find YouTube videos on how to safely pick up a loaded bike.

On gravel you will need to kick your way to solid ground so you have good footing.

Back up against the bike. I have done this with 800# harleys and it is a snap.
I have used this method for years and a number of times with the Tenere. BUT...a few weeks ago my wife dropped her bike in gravel. I tried and tried, but could not get sufficient foot traction to lift the bike. I honestly was stuck using this tried and true method. Fortunately I caught the eye of a Canadian Harley rider who came right over and gave me a hand.

I'm seriously considering getting the bike hoist.
