I am going to look at a gently used 2012 S10 with around 15,000 Km's. Bike has been well set up and the milage is low so may be a good bike. My question is are there any known issue I should be looking at when buying a used 2012 S10. A new 2016 would be nice but but the money I save on the 2012 which already has most of things that I would need to pick up for the new bike already installed.

I did the same thing and found a 2012 with racks, panniers, skid plate and tall windshield with 2000 miles for $8,000....couldn't be happier. I think there was a recall on a fuel gasket but the PO had already taken care of that. A recall on the headlight wiring socket was taken care of by a local dealer at no cost. The only problem I've heard of is with the cam chain tensioner (CCT) which clatters upon start-up. You may hear this on a cold bike in the area of right side upper-end. A redesigned 2014 part is available with gaskets for under $150. The replacement procedure is well documented and can be completed by anyone with mediocre skills. You can search the forum for CCT and you'll get a zillion differing opinions so it's up to you if and when to change out the part. Either way, I wouldn't pass up a deal on 2012.

The search function works well here and since the bike's been in production since 2010, the few downs are pretty well documented, and most noobs ask about accessories. Paste the following into the search window from the Home screen and you ought to find a number of nearly identical previous discussions:

You didn't put the price down but I would definitely include in the price of the bike, the price of replacing the clutch basket with a 2014 clutch basket.

The 2012 will have a chatter or vibration between 3,000 - 3,500 rpm. Best "upgrade" I did on my 2012. And, as said, the 2014 MCCT when you need to change it.

Other than that, get some foam ear plugs (engine is hella noisey) and ride !

Not all Gen1 bikes had issues with the clutch basket and I can think of more folks with stock than those who replaced. I sold mine with about 50,000 miles and the basket rattling was never an issue. I did get rattling from the CCT and replaced it with a 2014 rather than a manual - and never had that rattle afterward, either.

Hmmm, I thought they all rattled or in my case, vibrated. Mine was so bad I feared it was harming the engine. I am the guy that can read about a problem and all of a sudden , I have It!
I fixed everything but the darned rattling engine. Rattling or no, the bike just keeps on going!

Check the left button on the dash, it scrolls and resets the trips. If it goes there is no repair, it's a new console or live without a trip.
If it happens disconnect and then reconnect the battery at 1 o'clock. At least your clock is then right and you have the main odometer for total miles.
Guess how I know :-(

Make sure the rear brake is not sticking. I have a 13 and I finally took the caliber off and cleaned and bled i(fixed it) before that I bled the brakes four times and I'm on my third set of brake pads and I have a trashed rotor with only 15,000 miles .
