I like to know the air temperature when I'm riding. It was thoughtful of Yamaha to display the temperature of the air inside the air filter box, but that's not where my head's at. I searched high and low, even looked on the interweb but couldn't find the perfect gauge for a reasonable price ($80 is not reasonable). I paid $28 delivered for this unit from my favorite online retailer. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002B0KVFQ?pf_rd_mnb=ATVPDKIKX0D34&pf_rd_stb=center-2&pf_rd_rat=0817NMRY4ZRQZM6P18TH&pf_rd_t3r=101&pf_rd_ptd=470938631&pf_rd_ied=507846&tag=buaazs-20&pf_rd_ptd=470938631&pf_rd_ied=507846.
My previous two bikes have or had the 5-function digit meter that includes a temp gauge. I wanted something better, but to be honest, a clock, voltmeter, and thermometer in a lighted gauge for $25 is the best deal out there, not what I did though. I got a temp only gauge with good-sized display and a remote probe. I planned to mount it in my dash shelf but choose a different location for better visibility. This unit is designed for flush-mounting, so that's still an option for a cleaner-looking install.
With the magic of adhesive-backed hook & loop and Legos, it was easy to mount in a semi-permanent fashion. I routed and stashed the 3-meters of temp probe cable so that the probe is about 8 inches from the gauge as isolated as can be from the heat-generating engine, headlights, and rectifier while giving good exposure to outside air.
I drilled a hole to put the probe through. Put a piece of safety wire on the probe housing as a retainer on the backside of the vent scoop. I put an O-ring on the probe as a retainer on the front side of the vent scoop.
