The #1 thing that my wife notices to improve comfort is a back rest. The day I got this bike it was part of the plan and last night it’s finally coming to fruition.

Not bad for an hour and a half and stuff I had sitting in the shop. This is definitely a function over form part. Used a cheap Amazon Harley back rest.

I also played with thick fender washers to cover the deep countersink in the alt rider rack. I’m going to get some flanged head bolts if I can find them because you can see the wide counter sink is causing the head of the bolt to pucker. All in all I’m happy.

Next up I need to decide/ figure out what I’m going with the rest luggage. I have an Apache 3800 and 4800 case as well as some Harley SAC luggage. We don’t use the top box for actual luggage but more of a quick in and out access for storing stuff like gloves and water bottles and food etc… this has worked for us to keep us from messing with the primary side luggage on long trips so we’re not constantly trying to make things fit. This is one of the primary reasons I decided soft luggage was going to be best for us. We normally pack the panniers and don’t touch them until we get to camp/hotel. The rear case is our easy access but this year we are making the case slightly smaller as well as adding a tank bag to also serve as easy access during the ride.
Either way I’ll update as I continue to figure the luggage out.

If thats an Altrider rack i would keep an eye on it for fractures its going to be under more stress than having a box on it and the load will be travelling in a different direction.

Generally speaking aluminum is pretty known for cracking from stress due to its poor elongation properties. IMO the strider rack is too thin and made at too severe of a radius. As far as the stress is concerned I would t worry too much about it being a different direction of stress as the alt rider rack in no way was engineered for any use given its crap design.
Long story short, of course I’d be watching for failure as does anyone who has modified or built things custom. I had full intend building my own cargo rack but this one popped up used for a deal so I figured it was worth the price to save a little work for this year least.

What about adding a steel plate below as a reinforcement? Trace the holes, drill them, and not see the plate? Install it now before the aluminum gets stressed?

Exactly. As I said I am adding a box soon and the plan was to use the plate that I’m fixing the box too as support for the whole rack. I also need to rid of the other countersink holes still and paint it so we’re far from complete

Made some final touches to the setup. Thought about it and combined my idea of my rail rack I was going to build before I found this deal on the alt rider rack and solved the problem of needing to support the cargo box. I made new spacers that lowered the alt rider rack 3/4” and then made a stainless steel square tubing spacer/support frame for the cargo box. This gives me extra space under the rack for sticking something that’s not decided yet. Possibly tools. Also reinforced the alt rider rack further. I also picked up the final hardware which included much thicker washers and flange bolts for the bottom. Used a piece of HPDE to make the correct spacing for the rack.
still need to water proof the holes in the harbor freight case but I had to catch the motocross race.
this case will stay empty and be used mainly for holding our jackets and stuff when we go into places and leave the bike as well as when we have to go boxes, food for camp etc… basically it’s fast lockable storage than we can even cargo net stuff to the top. Additionally there will be an organizer on the top to hold first aid kit. IMG_2024-06-08-213926.jpeg

53 ford custom line club coupe. Original flathead and 3 on the tree with factory OD. It was my wife’s grandpas dream car and he bought it in the mid 80s even though her grandma said no. When he passed we purchased it from the estate to keep it in the family.
