I have done almost 50,000 kms in 3 seasons (off and on road) and the only issue I had thus far is a burnt headlamp bulb. I have had a few BMWs myself and it was not the case. I once bought a brand new R1200RT and had to tow it back to the dealership the very next morning because it was squirting oil from the main engine gaskets. Three months later the bike was grounded (globally) because of a major suspension failure. The other BMW required a rear tire and headlamp replacements the very first week of its purchase. This could be just me and BMWs but I am sure anyone would vouch for Yamaha's build quality and reliability being far superior to that of BMW's?

if you consider the amount of money one would spend at the BMW dealership durning the life time of the bike, a Yamaha Super Tenere, with the same comfort, power and features would still be value for money in my opinion even if they are priced similarly. But of course for a BMW brand loyalist, maintenance costs or build quality should not be a concern. Just my 2 cents!

i was referring to all the gadgets that some people want to put on the s-10, the more electronics and such are just more things to break and adds weight to the bike. make it simple and lightweight. i've had my beemers and triumphs, so i know about reliability. i'll take the yamaha over any of the rest. ::021::

Well scratch my little cotton socks ::007:: just a few comments regarding adventure bikes,

When I started looking at adventure bikes I always said "WOW"it's got to be the Gs,all the Big media company's giving it the thumbs up ,in fact you couldn't even have a shootout /review without a GS lurking in the background waiting to be pulled up and giving 1st prize or it started with a gaggle of bikes waiting to see if the could ever live up to the mighty GS and guess what ,you guessed it -NO

well these are my thoughts ::017::
BMW -after the 1150 GS everything went down hill,riders that had the 1200 wouldn't even go outside the door without the extended warranty(and rightly so) ::025::from final drive failure,ABS pump failure,reset service light €60 ,corrosion........(high reports from GS sites ).
The more I read about the GS :-[

So the new GS came out looking all shiny& new but I read somewhere that you can't plug a air compressor into the 12v socket because the computers say no and switch off (Like proper adventure bike) ::025:: computers need to say yes(with a dealers fee) to installing AUX lights ::001:: I wonder if you had to go through the desert life or death on a bike and you couldn't afford a breakdown would you pick the BMW or the Tenere ?? I won't include the KTM on that because it would probably need a valve clearance halfway ::26::

The Tenere is an absolute bulletproof bike ::022:: bang in a drop of petrol now and again and maybe if she's good treat her to a whiff of fresh oil and she's good to go -Nuff said

Make that a pre-production 2018. As you know, Yamaha has a 4-ish year refresh cycle so we will be due.

Yea, My goa drove his AA dump truck to the dumps until he died. Words cannot express the joy I felt crank starting that bad boy, I loved trying to keep my eyes on the road in the rain trying to adjust the spark and keep those magnificent windshield wipers in play.
not to mention 45mph could get damn scary.

I am new here and joined to learn about the Super Tenere...because I am contemplating purchasing one. I ran across this thread and it has given me pause...do I want to buy a bike that will be discontinued a year or two from now. hmmmmmm

::021:: An asteroid may blow us all to pieces next year ? Why worry about whether, or not the S10 will be phased out in a year or two ? Just get one and enjoy it, they are brilliant bikes and if Yamaha do drop it they will probably replace it with something equally good, or better. It's the best bike I have ever owned !

A number of us were on the 2011 pre-delivery plan, and can relate that this re-starts every year. The bike (both Gen1 and Gen2) has been on the market since 2010 and people were claiming the proximity of so much of the Tenere parts to the Fukushima reactor meltdown meant that Yamaha would have to kill the bike.


So "end of the line" has gotten to be an inside joke.


More realistically, Yamaha just went through a lot of expense to meet NEXT year's Euro pollution standards and has a regular refresh schedule for each model. That speaks loudly that a year from now, they will release Gen3 bikes pretty much on schedule. If you want to wait that long, go for it, but there are a lot of Gen2 bikes out there at really good prices and you'll lose an entire year.

All good points! I have studied this forum, trying to do my homework best I can. I have been riding a KLR for the last 5 years and have decided I want something a little more road friendly and still have the ability to ride gravel/fire road stuff. I do post on a youtube channel and follow a lot motovloggers. Seems the Africa Twin is all the rage with several of them, but I want to get out of that chain maintenance. I also like the idea of being able to adjust the suspension. Some of our roads are...well #$@^

You have a KLR and you're worried about an S10. You are in for a huge awakening once you buy an S10. Light years better in every single way. KLR and S10 should not even be mentioned in the same sentence.

I agree. I always thought I wanted a KLR650, but thought since the Super Tenere had shaft drive, tubeless wheels and more power, more comfort on road I took the chance and bought one the first day they were announced and waited 11 months for delivery like many others did. I have been more than pleased to say the least. Meanwhile a guy who lives a block up the road bought a new KLR650, and wanted me to ride it. I rode it a mile or so, and that mile or so made me think "who in this world would want this motorcycle"? No power, my old CT3 Yamaha 175 from 1973 would outrun the KLR650. They say the Super Tenere is under powered? The guys that test for reviews say this over and over. The Super Tenere would outrun a KLR650 if it had 3 spark plug wires fall off. I'm no speed freak, but my gosh that KLR was a good choice to not buy in my opinion. I bought the WR250 Yamaha and got bit by that mistake, the KLR is a similar mistake. If you grew up on 2 strokes, even 2 strokes back in 1969, these will not cut it. The Super Tenere cuts it for sure.

As the OP of this thread, all I'll say is this, I just bought a new Gen 2, it's sitting in the garage with 30 miles on it (I rode 25 miles last week, and then rain and snow hit).
Eventually they will stop making every bike model available today, only to be replaced.
