This isn't my bike btw:

XT1200Z with 12 Months MOT

Here we go.
Take a seat, this might take longer than it takes my wife to leave the house.
Welcome to the reluctant sale of my little BJ.
Yes, that's what my pals call it.
I've owned this bike for 10 years. I bought it from the first owner when it only had a couple of thousand miles on it.
As you can see, I've ridden BJ a lot!
It now has 170,712 miles on it. Yes, that is over 170,000 miles.
Snow, rain, wind etc. It's seen them all, on road and off.

So, this is your chance to be the proud owner of probably the highest mileage Super Tenere in the UK, maybe even the world?
I would really love to take it to a quarter of a million miles but because I use a motorcycle every day (I don't use a car), I don't have the time for this bike to be off the road.
It now needs at least a few days off the road, to give it a damn good seeing too!
Probably best considered as a project bike now. If you're handy with the spanners, I'm sure you could get this sorted pretty cheaply.
Or, go to an independent dealer, spend £1,000 on it and I'm sure you'd have a bike that would do all those miles again.

Yes, the Tenere is not 'trendy' like the GS, and NO, it's not super fast, but then it's not a Fireblade!
It does however, start every day and take you from A-B with very little hassle.

BJ is still even on the original clutch, and the clutch is still fine, doesn't even rattle.
I've changed the oil every 6,000 miles, and the final drive oil every 12,000 miles.
Oil filter has been changed every 12,000 miles.
Spark plugs as per the book.
All that has gone wrong is a couple of coils. Amazing eh!
It has a K&N air filter which is regularly cleaned and oiled.
Manual CCT fitted. Nothing wrong with the original but I prefer a Manual one.

NOW for the amazing bit!
Even though BJ has been spanked hard for the last 10 years, it has NEVER had a valve check!

So, what would I do to it now, if I was the next owner?
  • Valve check!!
  • VERY thorough service.
  • New bush in the gear lever (it's a bit sloppy)
  • New tyres
  • New grips (the Oxford heated grips still work fine, but the left one is really worn).
  • Replace front mudguard. It is cracked and is held together with zip ties (see pics)
  • Replace the Horn. Current one is very week. I think it got wet and that has damaged it.

I have used BJ on AND off road. I've done the whole of the Lake District TET on her, and most of the Welsh TET.
I'm including some off road tyres with the sale
I did have an argument with a Deer (not an old dear, but a real Deer) whilst off-roading.
This means that the right panel has been repaired.
It comes with ONE key. Long story but I had to change the ignition barrel. Call me if you need to know more about that.
Has heated grips.
Givi large touring screen. Standard one included but scratched.
AltRider luggage rack (as seen in pics)

ONE YEAR MOT. It was tested last week. (expires on 24.01.2024). The advisories were:
  • Registration lamp insecure. (it needs a new cage nut behind it. It still works and won't fall off, it's just wobbly!)
  • Rear brake disc worn, pitted or scored but not seriously weakened.
  • Rear brake indicates slight fluctuation of brake effort.

I'm realistic that this bike might be sold to someone that wants it for parts but I'm really hoping that it might be pampered and then ridden some more. I'm sure it would do some more, but it DOES need a very thorough service.
It can sound a little rough on start up occasionally, but once it is warm it sounds fine.
It gets very hot when in traffic and I suspect this means it really DOES need a valve adjustment, and/or new radiator cap, coolant flush. Obviously, if doing the valve check, stick a new head gasket on as well.

I would be much happier if the buyer collects this bike with a van. It could be ridden away but I would much rather you take it home and go through it with the spanners first!
It is now on SORN so no test rides, sorry!
Please study the pics carefully, and please be realistic about this bike. It is best seen as a winter hack or a project bike. It NEEDS work. It will be sold as seen, with no come back afterwards. You are welcome to view before hand but please give me some warning because the bike is no longer stored at my house.

Oh, and in case you are wondering. I'm selling it for the reasons stated above, AND, I've bought another Super Tenere!

OK. I guess that's about it. Message me on ebay if you have any questions. I can also whatsapp more pics if you like.

Happy biking and happy bidding.

I get the impression that routine maintenance was not high on his list of priorities.

I still have 130,000 miles before I need a valve check!! Now that's first hand Yamaha reliability!! I'll be dead before that!! Best, honest ad I've ever read. Good luck with sale. Keep us posted with your 2nd Tenere. Hopefully, it will serve you as well as this one.

So can anyone in the uk better that mileage. Think its the highest I’ve heard of. My mate Charlie has 70+ on his 16 plate, and even though he’s bought a KTM he still seems to prefer the S10. KTM needs a big service and he’s held off cos of the cost of it.

I have done about ten valve checks on Yamaha FJRs, and every single one has required adjustment to get back to factory specs. It's a lot harder to tell when the clearance would go to 0 and actually cause problems though.

For others like me wondering what SORN meant.

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It is used to inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) that you are registering a vehicle as off the road. This means the vehicle cannot be driven on a public road when it has been registered with a SORN.

[IIRC, there was a member on here that put 199,000 miles on his . . . . w/o a valve job . . . . before it quit running.QUOTE]

That was me. He still has 29,000 more miles...In all seriousness, they do need to be checked eventually. I had to replace the valves and springs, etc because they got too hot from lack of clearance and cracked. Luckily the head was not damaged. It's fixed and back on the road at 212,000 miles. My 2016 is at 120,000 and will get it's second valve check in March.
