Those young ladies are twin cities girls. Their life has not been easy but despite their challenges they are certified teachers and last I heard are teaching elementary classes

when I see challenged people overcoming incredible adversities, I feel small when I bitch about my problems

Do not pity them, they do not want it. Do not joke about them because we have not earned the right to do so

Volvo quality and reliability reviews got FAR better after Geely bought the company. iirc they went from something like 14th to 4th in owner reviews.

Geely also owns Polestar, Smart, Lotus, and others.

They started manufacturing some nice cars in Mexico in November 23 and my guess is that we will start to see their cars in the US in a year or two. This is the electric and they make a gas powered version. Take my word, these are NOT junk, they are well supported world class competitors with stunning interiors and high quality.

Now for some huge downsides, same as with BYD coming to the US. Building these in Mexico (same as Tesla soon) means they get around the big tariffs which have kept the Chinese cars out of the US market. Those tariffs are the only thing which has kept them from underpricing anything Detroit can do.

The BYD will be $31k BEFORE the $7,500 incentive, so a direct competitor to the New Bolt, Leaf, and other entry EVs. BUT - BYD is selling the same car in China for $14,000 and making a profit. Nobody can beat their ability to undercut on prices and take market share, which means jobs.

Further, ALL new cars from all manufacturers feed data back to their manufacturers. I refuse the On-Star service in my Chevy yet still get monthly reports about the state of battery health, tire pressures, etc. Tesla cars can send over 1,000 parameters to Freemont Cal every time the car gets near the home wifi, and they got in trouble because employees were watching videos of what people were doing in the cars!

All that data for the Geely and BYD cars will go to data centers in Shenzhen. They won't need to fly balloons over the US because they will have both data and camera access to pretty much everywhere, including military bases. I'm sure there will be Congressional hearings where they will plead innocence, same as TikTok, but the fact and ability remain.

This does not make for good reading.

Volvo may be 4th in owner reporting of something, but I doubt it's reliability. DM and I picked the Volvo SUV as our favorite contender to replace the Audi. It was a clear winner for us, until we started reading the owner reviews. Even knowing how the internet magnifies mole hills into mountains, we couldn't ignore it.

After talking to my Volvo loving buddy, he admitted he's never owned one past 48K miles. And he pointed out electrical issues like sun roof just randomly opening.

We passed.
