I'm not in the market for anything soon, but I really liked the looks of the new 1300. But knowing they expect the owners to replace the shaft every 48K is a massive turn off. The things are expensive enough to maintain, but you have to draw a line somewhere.

I guess that’s their very lame excuse for all the years of BMW driveshaft failures. Seems like every other company has no problem building driveshaft’s that last a couple hundred thousand miles and for much more reasonable prices.

Well, it is about time for a new motor. Or, the rest of the world will be the only ones having fun riding one.

I think that the idea in the future will be: “If I can't have something…then I'm going to make sure that you don't have it either”…(for those who make decisions that affect the rest),…then we will have to observe more closely to those who make decisions, sitting at a desk... I'm not saying it for Yamaha (who are makers)... I'm saying it for those who legislate...

I had an '04 1150. It had drivetrain problems then. They're still have drivetrain problems now. And they're still claiming to be the superior machine. And with all of their problems, people still believe the hype.

Glad it's not my bike or my money.
My second 1150 sheared it’s input splines. At the time BMW didn’t have any so it took a while to find a good sh gearbox instead. Sold the bike a year later and about 18mths after that the new owner contacted me as that one had sheared as well. I’m hoping my 850 gives the splines an easier time of things, although at 24 years old any grease on them is most likely pretty useless by now.

They told me that they only saw this when people were pulling trailers. o_O Wasn't pulling a trailer when it failed the first time, and I wasn't pulling a trailer when it failed the second time. And both times, when the failure occurred, it took out the clutch too. And one clutch install wasn't done perfect, so the clutch failed again all on its own. At least that failure was covered for two years after initial installation because it's that common.

I haven't been around here much in the last year or so, because I bought a 2023 BMWR1250gsa last April. I still have my Super Tenere though. Dealer wouldn't give me much for it on trade, so I just kept it. Here's what my dealer told me about the driveshaft issues last spring: After lots of testing BMW traced the failures to sudden changes in rear wheel speed when getting the bike airborne and landing hard. This confused the bikes dynamic traction control. BMW then came out with an updated download for the computer. There was also a corrosion problem and a little drain thing was added to the driveshaft housing. Dealer did both of these changes to my bike before I picked it up. This may explain the issues on GSs and GSAs, but who gets an RT airborne? This dealer also mentioned that they have not seen any driveshaft failures. If BMW wants to put a new driveshaft in it on their dollar, so be it.

I have almost 18,000 miles on mine with zero issues. The bike has been great and my dealer has been great. I knew going in that this would be an expensive endeavor. I take it in for everything, oil changes, tires, inspections etc... I'm tired of working on everything. Most of the time I make an appointment and they service the bike while I wait. To me it's all worth it because the bike is such a joy to ride. I have 2 more years and 18,000 more miles of warranty left. It's been a long time since I put that many miles on a bike in a year. Last season I put 17,500 on the BMW, 2,500 on my HD, 2,000 on my DR650, 1,000 on my S10 and a few hundred on my old Triumphs and Norton.

Next time I go to my dealer, I will get the latest info the driveshaft thing. Just thought I would share the info I have so far, don't want to start another BMW pissing contest!

I'm glad to hear that, but you're still in the honeymoon phase; aka under warranty. And they truly are a dream bike when they're new. But yeah, BS flag on getting the bike airborne being the cause of the problems. Like you mentioned, how many RTs get jumped. Mine never did and was on its third shaft. When my side stand snapped in half, they were quick to accuse me of sitting on the bike while using the side stand. My dealer had an answer for everything. Sounds like yours may be a better dealer though.

This one failed at 115k, on an RS though. No interest by the dealers so my mate had to import a good used rear end from Europe. Also know another chap with a GS where the caliper came away and wiped out all the spokes in the rear wheel and also shattered the final drive. Dealer blamed the tyre fitters for not refitting caliper correctly even though its not touched for a rear wheel removal. Again that owner had to source SH parts and pay the dealer to fit them.

Ahh, no, next time you go to the dealer he will lie to your face, just like he does to every other customer. It's when you catch them in the lie, point it out, rub their face directly in it, and then they say, "Oh, sure, except those failures you just pointed out". BTDT got the tow bill. And this was a highly regarded BMW dealer, telling me to my face that he'd never seen that failure after I'd had dinner the night before with another rider that had the exact same failure, and took it to the exact same dealer, same service writer, same tech, in the last month.
