little humidity to sow a winter grain…
Maybe, maybe not. I saw something similar, just last week, being done down here, which I haven't seen before. They were spreading something, and from a distance it looked like smoke from a fire. But after they were done the ground was white.

You have probably seen an amendment spread to correct the PH of the soil…If it is acidic, lime is spread….if it is alkaline, plaster is spread…Amendment that usually only lasts the crop cycle. but it allows to approximate the PH of the soil to the ideal of the crop, and to maximize the absorption of nutrients
In general, dry soils (white soils) tend to be alkaline and moist soils (dark soils) tend to be acidic.

The only thing I'm sure about, is that this field has never been treated like this before. I don't know if the crop is being changed, or they decided the crop needed help or what. I did hold by breath, and drive real fast through it. I also knew I didn't need any treatment.

We are having problems over here with chicken farms dumping the poo and the Phosphorus getting into rivers.

Normally, amendments (lime or plaster) are spread on complicated soils with pH. When the soils are either a little above or a little below neutral, it is not usually corrected. “But”, as the prices of fertilizers skyrocketed….it can be used as a strategy, to place a little less fertilizer on the crop…and see if correcting the ph, it is possible to improve its absorption

Where was then poo going before? Where does it need to go? I get real skeptical when any body/thing tries to convince me of the impending man-made global warming doom. I'm not saying that article is wrong, but at the very end (and when you click on the link) they want money to fight the fight.

I do believe in global warming. It's been going on since the glaciers retreated from what is now the US. And man is not helping the matter, but what man is doing, percentage wise, is like pissing in a lake and saying you just raised the level. I think that all these "new" volcanoes, and pockets of methane venting into the air in Siberia, are doing a lot more damage to our air than man ever could. Should we do as much to reduce it as possible? Absolutely. But let's use some common sense.

That is the problem….The only ones who have the right to claim the ecological damage produced by the preparation and processing of food….are those who die of starvation…..the rest, if they want to save the planet…they have to reduce consumption. The population grows faster than the resources it needs, so it will not be surprising that in the near future, farm waste will be "recycled" and with it nuggets with chicken "flavor" will be made.

Am with you on Siberia that's potentially a big problem. For me it doesn't matter what the cause is but the effects are plain to see of whatever is going on. What is undeniable is that big business in the food chain is causing many problems. Avian Flu in particular. Something to consider we have cut back to the bone just about everything to do with inspections of our food trade here and everything else that's why it's left to independent groups who take it up. Governments don't care.
