Thing to Test: Skid plate(altrider), Crash bars (altrider), Foot pegs, Happy trials boxes.
Up I-70 over Fremont pass to Leadville, still a lot of snow above Leadville, Down through salida into the San Luis Valley. Pick up Canero pass stop at stom king camp ground, then ride the old logging roads to get a feel for the bike. Come down off the pass ran into a cattle drive, follow the cowboy through the herd. Not the first time I have had cow S%#@ on my bike. Off to find some smooth dirt roads to turn off the ABS and practice pegs up drifts and slides to finish the day off.
Day 2 off to Mendo pass the east side, it is a good place to test not to long but has, fast dirt road leading up to it, some sand, some steep loose sections, some rock steps and beautiful views. I did not want to go to rough I was alone, stock tires a big bike that is new to me. The last 10 yrs I rode a KLR650 set up for the off road. It was easy to go fast and rough and if I did fall much easier to pick up.
The Results: Soft bags are a must for the rough stuff I dabbed a foot and the box hit my calf ( I don’t need a broken leg or ankle ). Like all stock bikes needs more spring front & rear. I feel the bike could handle better at speed. It would also help a little with the ground clearance. Turn off the Traction control and with Good throttle control at the handle bar the big bike climbs steep loose rock very well. ABS worked good on steep loose down hills and generally all around. Could be a problem if you need to lock the rear wheel to steer the bike into a sharp corner. Had a little trouble changing lines quickly. Better off road tires would give me a more confidant feeling. The foot pegs worked good lots of standing. The KLR was more forgiving if I picked a bad line on a mean rough hill or at speed. All around Great bike the rough stuff will require more work. Hey it’s a big heavy bike. The medium rough is fast and smooth and when you get back to the pavement Turn up the throttle and set the cruise relax and get ready for the next off road adventure. THE BEST NEWS NO CRASH BAR TEST.

Great report! You are definitely bold to go off-road solo. Glad nothing happened…

Yeah the bike is under-spring for anyone over about 175lbs….

You'll have to take the group on part of that ride in early July! There's a guy coming in from out of town that wants to ride with us, this sounds like a great one for him.

Just wait 'til you replace your stock tires, you'll like it even more then.
