Hello, my name is Dick. Been riding motorcycles since I was 5. Grew up hare scramble racing and I've built and ridden all sorts of stuff over the years. As of recent years our trips are getting longer and more adventurous and I began the pursuit of finding the perfect bike. The ST may be the closest thing that has ever existed lol. Had our heart set in the ES but I found a 2k mile 13 very close by. Looking at it and a versys 1000 soon.

Personal opinion is go for 2014+ Gen 2.
I'd prioritize Gen 2 over prioritizing ES.
But there is no wrong answer.
I had a heck of a time finding any ST with low miles. I've never seen a gen 2 that wasn't ES personally. That I'm seeing is it must be a heck of a good bikes because I would have to drive or fly 500 miles to find something gen 2 with less than 30k miles

Don't let the mileage worry you. This bike is extremely long lived. Many here have over 100k mi. One has well over 350k mi. Pricing and accessories are what to look for. The 350k miler lives in Iowa.

Yeah I have sort of realized that. One thing I will say is I am sort of an anal nerd when it comes to taking care of bikes so the more miles something has on it before I get it the more I obsess about everything. I've opened my search up to 15k and there are 2 in my area but they are still like 12k. I had planned on putting half down on a new one next spring but this 2013 is only 6800 bucks so walking in and buying it cash it pretty appealing.

North Central IL. Hour south of WI, Hour from the lake, Hour from IA.
I'm just south of Rockford. I have a 2017 and it is a standard suspension. I am fine with that as I upgraded the suspension. My tear down and putting farkles on is chronicled in "What’s TenereGUY been up to" thread. I am currently returning from the North Coast of Alaska and then gone down the west coast from Vancouver to Bodega Bay CA. Then cut across the Central Valley to Grass Valley and then upnthe Sierra Nevada mountains to Lassens Volcanic Park then NE to Southern Oregon across to Boise on a lot of gravel ranch roads. Over to Eastern Idaho up through Yellowstone and over to Cody via the Chief Joseph Hwy. Back over the Chief Joseph Hwy and up and over Bear Tooth Pass. Currently in Red Lodge, MT. I went on a side gravel road today that 20 miles later went down to a rough dirt/shale side by side track. Went up that a bit. Decided to turn around as I am loaded heavy and by myself. Had a couple of water crossings too. I have always had Honda's and if you read the thread you'll know why I have this bike. I am totally impressed with this bike. Now at 11,500 miles this trip and I had a 3 day ride on it in Northern Georgia on back, back fire roads. Not having ES ... I haven't even noticed it. I just upgraded the rear shock spring as there was a long lead time on a Penske and I had to pass. I have covered rough terrain and it handled it nicely. This is written by a person who was drooling to get an African Twin... just for reference as I was not a fan of Yamaha as I had no experience. This bike also corners very, very well. Even loaded. I am near the Byron Nuclear Plant. Come up and check my bike out. I should be home in 3 or 4 days.

I got mine with 13,500. Bike isn't even broken in. I am over 26,000 and going up daily as I have to get home from MT now. Don't let 15-20,000 scare you as long as it is clean and not beat to crap.

If you get to ride a Gen 1 and Gen 2 back to back, you will want the Gen 2. I just traded in a 2021 S10 ES with 33,000 trouble free miles and bought a new 2023 ES.

Awesome! We are not far apart then, I can see Byron nuke plant if I drive like 15 minutes from my house where there is a little elevation. I took will likey up the springs a little since it's me and my wife riding 99% of the time.
I might swing by if I snag this tenere up. Looking at it tommrow.

if you can get over to Anamosa IA before 9-4, they have a Super T with over 300k on the clock AND it was ridden to the museum

sadly, the museum is closing for good 9-5-23
Really! I wanted to make it there before they closed. That's would be awesome to see!

Fly and ride... that'd be a bonus! :)
TBH, it's a rare day that I've bought a vehicle in-state. Usually what I'm looking for is narrowly defined (as is yours) and then you gotta cast a wide net and pounce wherever it appears.
Anyhow, keep looking! Good luck.

I wouldn't mind a fly and ride as I live doing long road trips. It is hard for me though because I have job where I am in call 24/7 365 so time off takes advance planning. Lining up a deal and getting my time of planned with enough time. There is actually a really nice one listed on this sight right now that I would jump on.
