I see that the European Tenere has silver side panels, which seems to really brighten up the bike.
Has anyone painted their side panels and if so, how has the paint held up on the plastic surface? -JEP-

I have a black 2012 and painted my side panels which were kind of a charcoal colour which I felt did not match up with the black.
I painted them black with a rattle can and they came out very nice. So far about 6 months and about 5 k on the bike since repainting and still fine.
I gave them light coats, about 6 in total. Like the look way better now that the colour matches up with the rest of the bike.

I wanted a carbon fiber look so I first tried some 3M carbon vinyl. Looked ok but started delaminating by the end of the year. so I went with "Hydro dipping". Turned out great, Do not have mounted on bike yet (curing). About $250.00 .....

Several months ago I saw a white tenere with white side panels. I didn't like it. For me, it looked too much like a sport bike.

Langolier,

The Carbon contrast with White is fantastic to me!
And I'm not even a big carbon fan, aesthetically speaking. (love it functionality wise)

Love to see it all assembled. Picks promised?

Painted mine two years ago and then gave them a clear coat. Holding up well. I much prefer the silver

I hear what you're saying, and this kinda has been nagging in the back of my mind. At the same time the non-descript 'dull grey' panels are not pleasing on the eye either ! And I have a scratch on one of the panels... I was going to add a few graphics and lacquer over them to keep the black & white theme going. People may mistake it for an R1 !

I know I'm in the minority, but I propose plastidip. I have is on the side of my tank instead of stickers (some call them protectors). I have it on my front fender. When I pull the panels to change spark plugs I'll have it on them too.
It's easy to put on, and take off. Protects the paint, and easy to touch up.

Very nice! I never heard of such a thing. So that was $250 each or both sides?

Both Sides. That Plastidip is interesting stuff, What kind of prep does the surface need for good adhesion ?

Wow, that's super cool. Any problems with fitment afterwards with the bolts, clips, etc? I'm not sure how much thickness it would add. I'm really considering this. Compared to the cost of real CF parts, this is a pittance.

I washed the tank with soap and water, taped it off with blue painters tape and plastic, then sprayed it on (several thin coats). When I pulled the painters tape the edges were a little rough, so I used pinstripe stickers from walmart to get a smooth edge and keep them from pealing. If I ever sell the bike I'll heat it up and peal it off. I did the same to my front fender.
The picture of my tank is after two years. The best part is you can touch up spots that get scratched or rubs without having to paint the entire tank again, and because it has a slight texture you can't see where you applied the new spray.

No fitment problems at all, Very little if any heat is involved. Adds no more thickness than a coat or two of paint and clear coat. He was very meticulous to the point of matching the angle of the "fiber" on both sides and front to back. Came back with a limited warranty as far as defects and claims it's as durable as a car finish (since he uses same type of clear coat). Time will tell but initially I'm very happy with it. It was about a week to two week turn around.

What amazing times we live.
Our imagination is barely a limiting factor.

It's crazy. Both of these Teneres are so cool!
The options are nearly limitless.
