This years riding season was tempered by a few tech snags... Headlamp harness, No-start, BT headset, and GPS in particular. Seems those distractions bore the lion's share of my various forum postings which has had me not extolling the many outstanding virtues of this great machine. That occurred to me in a very glaring manner while out riding the other day. In addition to having had the good fortune of meeting a fellow ADV'er and his lovely Lady, I had one of those fantastically unburdened moments of Riding Clarity... By which I became completely aware of my good fortune.

Every motorcycle ever made is a freedom machine and I've enjoyed a good sampling of them. The ST however, seems to elicit that connection we look for in a bike. You know... Like when you actually feel the quality, capability and reliability in ideal convergence... In any circumstance. Truth be told, I didn't buy this bike with it's looks being at issue. Moreover, I view bikes as tools... Wrenches really. The Tenere is the Swiss Army Knife of motorcycles by my measure. It's so far done everything I've asked of it and a few of those things were asking quite a bit. It's also done them with a high degree of manageability and predictability.

When you see me coming down the road and it looks like I'm a raving, waving idiot like a first year biker, please know that my enthusiasm isn't just fomented by my day on my machine... It's that I'm wishing the same for you.

To everyone that gets it. ::003::

Travex: What a great expression of truth, love & happiness. Your words helped me realize why I've been riding my S10 at the expense of other things that need to be done. Thank you.

I get it. My moment happened last week while I was exploring a local gravel road. About 4 miles in the county had put in large sections of unpacked large gravel that was almost railbed clinker and loose like sand is. I almost chickened out and turned back.

Instead I just moved my brain to enduro mode and let Shrek (the ST) have its head. Although there were a few pucker moments, we plowed through about five miles of it at 50 mph.

A serious confidence builder. Bet I could climb a tree with that bike if needed to escape a lion or something!

Combo: Good for you... I hope those chances come often. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hungry Tiger: Thanks for your very kind words! Glad they were received in the intended spirit.

greg the pole: Thanks kindly! That's high praise coming from The Tenerist... Which I enjoy immensely. Keep up the fine work Sir.

BravoBravo: Nice choice! I'll look for you next time I'm in London/St Thomas/The Pinery. Very nice up your way. You'll know me by the wave.

rlasater: Good for you and your confidence boost on Shrek! This bike is one of those special ones that seems to encourage more satisfying riding. Mine's the Bruiser... Cause it's black and blue.

My bike is the freedom machine that takes me places to where I want to go. The ride is only half the adventure. The Tenere serves the purpose well.

Travex, my wife and I were recently down in your neck of the woods on my S10. We were with a group of friends who do an annual fall ride, usually in NY and/or PA. We were in Mayville for three nights, staying at Webb's Resort. Beautiful riding country! ::008::

Cheers,

Bruce

I have owned alot of motorcycles in the past 5 years and I have to agree with your comments about the ST and more over riding in general. Well said....
This is the first bike I have owned where i do not feel compelled to make it something it is not. It does everything that I want it to,,,,pretty much as it is.

After a few weeks commuting on my ER6F I went out on the S10 at the weekend, the quality of the Big Yamaha really shines after the cheap and cheerful Kawasaki, 20+ years of superbikes and high end ADV bikes has distorted my view of quality. Although the Kwak is a nice little bike, it does highlight there is a BIG difference between a £6k bike and a £12k bike.

I also realised how much these things soak up bumps, the worsening state of the UK roads has had me cursing even the long travel loveliness of my S10, until I rode the little Kwak home after buying it, I was punted out of the seat on bumps I barely notice on the S10, and have my spine jolted by bumps you really do not even feel on the S10.

I am also properly convinced I do not want to go back to a sportsbike, the ER6F is "roomy" compared to modern sportsbikes, yet I still find it way too small for distance work, it is perfect for my commute to work and fits through gaps the S10 would struggle with, as well as returning much better MPG in slow traffic, and the tyres should last longer with half the weight / torque attacking them, I also cannot be doing with this gearchanging malarkey every time I want to speed up or overtake, the S10 really is a torque monster - go ride something smaller to really appreciate it ;)

cbrunsw: "The ride is only half the adventure." Absolutely.

rlasater: Pardon my ignorance on the matter, but isn't Shrek green?

BravoBravo: Lovely area you were in... Good for you, your wife, and your friends. ::003::

Duckhead: "i do not feel compelled to make it something it is not." Well put. My tank bag, GPS, and I are the only non-oem farkles.

Rasher: Very nice post. Thank you for it.

Blue, green, I'm not picky. It's the way the pointy front turn signals bounce that really earned it the name.
