I'm only a couple of hundred miles into my 2016 nonES and I love it, now my Strom had no electronics and I'm happy to have ABS and Cruise control, traction control is built into the right wrist but that's not to say it might not save me at some point!

I'd stay with the Yamaha. My 2012 has been great. I would not want any of the other offerings other than a newer Super Tenere. The ABS and traction control ect, whether lean angle or not is all crap I don't want. I wish my 2012 didn't have ABS or traction control. Get rid of those two things it would be near perfect, but the way it is I still like it and looking at other motorcycles in the same class for the price there is no other motorcycle that comes close.
Big thread like 15 pages long over at the ADVrider site where a guy has a 2015 R1200GS that won't start and he has to pay $500 for the dealer to even look at it. BMW and KTM different class of motorcyle, out of my comfort area.
IMO, when one misstates the facts, they start to lose credibility. In this case, you've grossly misstated the facts.

Truth -- owner took the bike to a BMW dealership because it wouldn't start. The remedy was $450, and included draining the gas tank, filling the gas tank with new gas, lifting the tank, removing the fuel pump, and doing an oil and filter change, as well as the 1.5 hours of troubleshooting that determined the rider had bad gas/too much stabilizer in the fuel, put in when he winterized the bike.

Hardly your reported $500 "just to look at it," huh?

As the saying goes, never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Thanks for all those riders out there. The Tenere is sticking around...it just fits and it works...I just think I will slow down and spend a little more $$$$ on safer gear or high vis equipment!

+1 on the training camps. Refreshing and improving your riding skills with a good riding school will likely save your ass more than tech. That said, there's no replacement for a test ride. Ride what feels good/natural to you now, based on your own priorities, maintenance and cost be damned. Hell, you only turn 60 once!

Well I did half of this... I purchased a set of Klim Badlands jacket and pants and they fit me like they were made for me.
All of this is also part of the fact that I wanted to replace my 99 SV650 with an FJ09. Instead I upgraded the suspension and got the Kilimanjaro gear. So I spent a lot less.
