I'm no engineer. Not that kind anyways.

So you think it could be 470lbs with shaft drive?

That WOULD be very noticeable. And if everything "Tenere" was still there, I would be smitten.

I want it to be lighter. But can't think of much I would be willing to give up. Except less cargo capacity.
Well, 470 would be 80 pounds heavier than the naked version, so that should work.

You'd have to still be very careful transforming that naked to a Tenere with only 80lbs to work with. Based on pics only, of course.

But I'm starting to believe. Thanks guys. My dream bucket is refilled.

Glad I could help. PS, it is ~75hp, a wee bit more than the 660 motor.

Not going to happen, never, nope, not in the USA. The KLR reigns supreme in that category.
Yamaha will not make the investment to certify the lead sled for sales in the USA, they know sales will be dismal.
But dream if you must.. ::025::

you mean the KLR (*the 2 that I've personally owned*) that cannot go over 5000 rpm's or it'll chug oil ??
That KLR..?

FWIW : I'd buy the 660 Yammy in a New York minute -

ESPECIALLY over that chunk of iron - KLR.

Hannabone, you know I want a 660 but I will defend the KLR. I am guessing you have a 2008 or early 2009 KLR which came with bad rings. The best performance upgrade you can do for a KLR is the 685 (lighter piston) kit. Since the valve seats are weak it is good to have KLRCary (Godspeed my friend) build your head. The performance is more than you expect. Cruise at 75 all day. The 685 loved 4500 to 5500 and would redline anytime. I still want a 660.

I had an '05 KLR that never ate oil. It was dead reliable and ridiculously simple. All traits that we know well and that have served to make the KLR as popular as it is. Still... there were enough warts for what I wanted out of a bike that I got rid of it for a Tenere.

I just had the opportunity to ride a KLR688 that had been worked on by WymanWynn in CA. The bike was utterly transformed. Were I to get another KLR - I would certainly do the 688 job to it.

Quit making fun of my KLR. (2006) It has more trouble free miles on it than the 33,500 on my beloved Tenere.

And I bet it NEVER lets me down.
Since I NEVER ride it anymore.

Ah yes... the KLR thread has begun ;D

Let's face it, the KLR comes with a good price tag and is reliable, but that's about it. I had the '10 and it was about as exciting and inspiring as Obama at a job creation summit.

This thread defines why the US doesn't get "the good stuff.". If it ain't free or close to it "we" won't buy it and it sits on the showroom floor until the manufacturer pulls the line.......and then "we" bitch that they pulled the great bike we screamed to have and no one bought.

Cost is secondary to me. I want the good stuff up front.

I agree. That bike here would be $10,000. to $11,000. cdn probably about the same in the US. That's KTM 690 territory. They wouldn't sell many when you can get the S10 for a couple of grand more. And a KLR for $6000. Won't happen.

I don't know Red.
the klr is basic and slow. I had a 99 with many ho hum reliable miles, and a brand new 2008 that never did it for me.
If they brought something a bit lighter than my blue pig, I would be the first one to spend money on it.

Pay it now or pay it later.
it can't be too basic (klr-about as exciting as getting a new fridge), or too high strung (ktm 690-1st, 2nd gear wheelies, and a bad fuel pump, that you can't trust to run around the block).
Slap the FZ motor in it, with a shaft, and you got a winner. That thing is 415 wet, with a boat anchor of a muffler at the bottom of it. But that motor, man oh man..

If they make it great, give us the option. They took a chance on the Tenere, and it's got a following...why not go after the GS8, the triumph 8,
