I'm considering the SW Motec Crash bars for my new ST. I know, I know Alt Riders seem to be the most bomber but trying to cut cost where I can. Question is, can the right side plastic cowling be removed with the bars in place? While I'm asking questions, on the upper right side cowling there are four hex screws you remove and two plastic quick connecters on the front edge of the upper plastic cowling, how do you remove those to get the upper cowling off?

Thanks,
-ss

Yes, you can remove the right side cowling with the SW-M bars in place. As far as the others on the upper cowling, I'll have to go look at mine to see if there is anything special about removing them, but I don't recall any problems in doing that.

The upper cowling (with the quick connects) comes off very easily with the crash bars. The lower do as well, but you will want to drape a cloth or towel over your bars to prevent scrathing the cowling as you pull it out. If I remember correctly, you depress the center of the plastic pin, then pull the fastener out to remove those two fasteners.

FYI- I replaced the bolts that hold the sides of the fuel tank with a pair of regular hex head, rather than Yamaha's button head. Reason for this is that, especially when raising the tank, I can remove the right side cowling and simply loosen the left side (I haven't found the left side to be removable with the crash bars installed due to the thickness of the radiator and fan). Then I can put a gearwrench on the bolt and remove it to pivot the tank up.

Thanks Racer, I got those quick connectors off. I had not used those before. Thanks for the tip on the fuel tank bolts. I'll check that out.

I know this is a little old, but I've just bought my S10 and the RHS upper cowling doesn't have any quick connectors? Just the four quarter turn hex heads.

The quick connectors look to be for the lower cowl only.

Cheers,
