Hello
I'm new here and plan to buy a 2012 Super Tenere with 80 000 kms (50 000 miles) Presently, I own a BMW R1200RT and with the bad roads we have here, I'm tired with my back injured when I hit holes etc.
I drove the ST yesterday and I loved this bike. I have some questions for experts here.

1- It's sad this bike doesn't have an electronic cruise control. Can I install one on this bike ?
2- I'm 6 ft and the stock windshield is too small. Which one is the best ?
3- Anything special to check on the bike (2012) before buying it ?
4- I hear some motor mechanical noise during acceleration (like my BMW) is it normal ? Seller talked to me about a new clutch model which lower motor noise (???)

Thanks a lot

Check out McCruise. I’ve had their cruise for probably 50k miles. Works perfect. I’m 6’3”. A Madstad bracket and a 22” windshield is just right for me.

Winglets and one of those visor type thingys attached to the top of the stock screen work fine for me. I’m 6ft 2in.

Some Gen1 bikes (gen2 is 2014>), suffered with noisy and vibey clutch baskets, wasn’t a fault, just a characteristic. Fitment of a gen2 basket in most cases, eradicated most of the vibes and a lot of the noise.

If not already done, at 50k miles I’d be thinking about changing the CCT.

I'm 6'3" and use a VStream tall windshield with winglets. If you want cruise you can put it on but why not find a gen 2 which has it from the factory? Add up the cost of putting CC on a gen 1 and you probably will be in the price range of a gen 2.

Hello

I'm from Quebec in Canada
I know adding accessories increase the price. The 2012 bike I looked is as new. Paint is not even rubbed on motor sides ! It only need two tires. I would use road tires.
The price asked is $6500 CDN ($ 4772 USD) so gen 2 seems a lot costlier than that even with added mods added to the 2012 I want. As this is not a good time here to sell a bike, I will perhaps have to buy the ST before selling the one I presently have. This also means having to store two bikes for winter time. I had the sting while trying the ST.
Thanks a lot for your help.

$4,700usd and 50K miles for that bike is a pretty good deal. Unlike Beemer, the Tenere doesn't care what the odometer says as long as the maintenance was done. Looking at the McCruise website, it looks like they've already washed their hands of the Super Tenere. You might have to wait for a Gen 2 to show up at a good price unless you can live without cruise.

Man, ain't that the truth. I remember thinking that I wouldn't use it much, that the heated grips were gonna be the thing I would use most. I use the cruise every freakin' day. And now that I don't have to ride in the cold, I don't. I might be able to go back to a chain drive, but I'm not giving up my cruise.

I tried a Ducati Multistrada today. This is the funniest bike I tried in my life but I hated some aspects like: Awful brakes and I had my face on and near over the small windshield which offers no protection. Trying a bike and living with it is something different. I read the excellent thread about the ST vs the MS and with what I read, this convinced me that the ST is the best choice.

I put 50,000 miles on my previous 2013 Tenere, nothing really wrong with the bike but I hated not having cruise control so traded for a brandnew 2018 Tenere ES, it costed me plenty but I’m much happier now.
I do recommend carrying a spare set of rear wheel bearings, the right rear bearing on my 2013 failed at 45,000 miles while on a trip, no Yamaha dealer had the bearings and told me they had been on back order for a month, I wound up ordering a set from All Balls and it took a week to get them, spent a week in a motel in Missoula Montana, that turned out to be the most expensive motorcycle break down I ever experienced in over 900,000 miles of riding.

There'a 2018 at the local BMW dealer with 44 000 kms (27 500 miles) . They ask $14995 CDN ($10978 USD). It is blue (which I would like) with top case and side black metal travel cases.
As I already have a BMW R1200RT I try to sell, I'll go there tomorrow with my bike to look what they can offer for it. As this is not a Yam dealer but a BMW dealer, maybe I can do a good trade to get the 2018 ST which is a gen 2 with Cruise control. More on that tomorrow.

I tried a Gen 2 yesterday and decided that I'll not buy a gen 1.
I also tried a 2014 BMW R1200GS and fell in love. The bike is not as clean than the TS 2014 non ES which is show room condition.
The GS is funnier to drive than the ST but I hate the looks and plan to use the bike only on the road. I can't do a choice. Here ares some + and - for both

BMW
Funnier to drive
Wind protection seems better than the ST
I hate the looks
More power (ST could be flashed)
Noisy tires more trail oriented (bad for me)
Good condition but not the best for my taste but can be ok
Mags instead of spoked wheels (good for me)
Neutral hard to find (seller should go to the dealer to look at that)
clunky transmission
Price is $12 000 CDN

ST
Ultra clean awesome show room condition never went in trails.
I love the looks
Tires more road oriented (good for me)
Potential Reliability is a + over the BMW
No heated grips (can be upgraded later)
No electronic suspension but once it is settled I would not change settings
Price is $9000 CDN

Both bikes have 70 000 kms.
I plan to drive solo only on country roads. No long distance rides. On every bike I had, I have sore butt problems when driving over 1 hour. The ST and GS seemed to be the same for this.
