Went for a run on Saturday on the new S10, absolutely loved it . A friend on a GS came along so we could compare a both bikes. Yes the GS probably has more power but only above 6500 rpm and turns quicker but this can be compensated for. Definitely impressed with the S10.

Went for a run on Sunday with my wife, the S10 is ideal for 2 up work.

The S10 is a better bike for the money than the GS.

Off to the South Island (bikers heaven) mid March for some touring, cannot wait.

Personally can't appreciate the GS previsouly referred to a "cult like" following, must be "keeping up with the Jones's thing here in SA at least.

As we left Kimberly after breakfast on Sunday morning making our way up north from CPT on my newly aquired S10 a group of riders came riding into Kimberley which looked like the Bloem "GS" Club as there must have been at least 20 or 30 GS1200's in the pack with a few 800's and 650's jn the mix but then I spotted it....... aaah yes a Yamaha Super Tenere in the mix (only one) but man what a sight ............. at least one guy in Bloemfontein with some sense.

Personally what I think Yamaha needs in terms of marketing is "long way up" ...........

But they have already had the S10 doing the "long way up, down and back up again".

I suppose they didn't send along a camera crew and makeup artist, and I thinbk that is the problem. They also have a few long way rounds going on as well.

...I can envision a small 30 second ad with Nick looking all beat from the road...ala Jack Nicholson hair...and talking briefly on his major league romp up 'n down.
C'mon MommaYammy...you've got a strong showing there in a real world guy, doing your work for you.

Send a camera crew and lighting rig to Nick and do the do.

If BMW would make the plain vanilla R100gs again, they couldn't keep them in stock........until then, I'm pretty happy with the Tenere'

I'm sure if BMW did make those you'd find them pretty gutless compared to an S10.
Gutless? as in slow? OK by me.
Slow and steady goes a very long way. Lighter than a tenere, better gas mileage, carbs that can be repaired, ect.
Don't misunderstand: I like the Tenere a lot. My point was meant to be that BMW went too high-tech.

I have to agree with this, I don't mind the basic engine tech but the size of the bikes, the endless electrical gremlins etc etc. Yes.

Stand next to an R80 GS era bike and be amazed at how small they seem. A few modern materials and touches and that would have been all there needed to add, and then the competition may have just released litre or similar sized bikes.

Having said that though, ABS UBS, and the way the S10 works so effortlessly is a big plus, until you fall over in slippery mud I assume.

As I age and shrink and become brittle I will be keeping my eye out for an XT900Z shafty I hope.

The other thing I like is the fact that the S10 is almost as economical, within 20%, as the 250 I learned on. Amazing.

cant the forks just be dropped through the yokes about 5mm that usually quickens the steering on most bikes, only got mine 2 days ago so forgive me if i have overlooked something...

Yes, the already limited ground clearance, I scraped the pegs on the Demo bike, which in the UK run on Deathwings, as I intend to fit Roadsmarts the pegs would be wearing out faster than the tyres if I dropped the forks, with a ride height adjuster I could improve steering repsonse and increase ground clearance - plus I do like a quality shock, in my experience they always improve ride quality and work over a much wider range (handy when my use will be anything from solo Sunday Blats, to European tours two-up with luggage)

Try leaving it in a higher RPM range...not 5000 - but 6-7000...it loves singing its song in that range
You have obviously never ridden Alpine roads ;)
