Just came back from a 25 M coast ride with moderate traffic and noticed Sticky ,stiff, downshifting. Oil is good and clutch seems to be working as should and I have never laid her down so no bent shifting linkage.I was just wondering if maybe somebody else may be experiencing the same issue? I don't recall seeing a thread on this . 8)

There has been considerable discussion on this. Most of the time the cure is to remove the shift lever pivot bolt, clean and grease it and reinstall and downshifting will be fine. Make it a part of regular maintenance, perhaps every oil change.

Hi Mikel. Just do as ericz suggests and you'll be fine. Same happened to me. That ball joint kind of thingy bit!! gets dirty/dry/seized. Just needs greasing up. I know it doesnt seem to make sense that its only on the downshift...but thats all it will be.

It is not the transmission. Fred is correct.

I added a zerk and add a shot of grease before every trip.

A way to test whether it is the shifter or not is to give the bushing a shot of WD-40. Afterward remove, clean, relube the shifter bushing and you are good to go.

I just rode 1,300 miles in Central and Coastal California. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks you guys . Sometimes the mind plays tricks on us . I down shifted kind of hard a while back and had this thought in my head that maybe I bent shift fork or something! Just took a look at the linkage and lo and behold extremely dory. That's the great thing about this forum a wealth of knowledge from people that know just what I'm referring to. Thanks again . ::018::

I had the same problem. Downshifting was really bad when the bike was new. I greased everything up at about the 500 mile point and even that didn't help right away. But over the next couple hundred miles things finally loosened up and it's been great since.

Every oil change I remove mine and spray it down with silicon spray. 24k miles and no shifting issues.

Maintenance reminder for tomorrow, gracias. ::008::

UPdate: Removed, dry as a bone. Cleaned up & stuffed it full of anti-seize then re-assemble. Mucho better. :)

Update on the sticky shifter. Removed the shifter bolt and linkage cleaned and lubed all moving parts and took bike on another 25 mile ride. Seems to be shifting a little smoother ,maybe I'm just being over sensitive but I would not like riding canyons with a problem down shifting. I'm just going to ::021::. Thanks to all who responded. ( after reading all the threads it seems Ca. Bikes seem have more of an issue with this )

Same thing I saw. As I said above, after my clean and lube job it took maybe 200 miles before it really loosened up. And once it started, it got better quickly. I can tap down through the gears as quickly as I want now. Before it was more like tap ... nothing ... tap harder ... grind down one gear ... tap ... nothing ... wait 2-3 seconds and try again ... may grind down one more, or not ...

You get the idea. It was really bad and was making me hate riding the thing sometimes. Glad those days are behind me.

I have heard one person that did not have luck with lubbing the linkage. He actually broke an internal spring, which was easily repaired, then his shifting was buttery smooth. If you do some searching I'm sure you can find the thread here. I hope that is not your issue.

My new 2014 S10, 3900 mi, was sticky downshifting. Greased the shifter pivot tonight, all better.

Just curious, is this neglected from Yamaha, or my dealer?

No. I believe it picks up road dirt.

Can we just get this as a sticky, since it is normal maintenance for not just this bike, but a number of Yamahas? I posted a set of photo instructions 2-3 years ago.

Do you have the link to your photo instructions? I looked, but only found a single pic...

The only problem I've had in the 600 miles on my '14 was shifting to first. Sometimes it just doesn't want to do it.

Lube the shifter and it will. Does not seem logical but it works.

The deal on the sticky shifting is that if there is no lube (mine came from dealer with nothing...) the shift lever won't spring back up far enough after you down shift once. When it doesn't return to the middle position, you can't down shift again.

If you're out on the road, spraying a bit of WD40 or PB Blaster will free it up until you can get home and lube it up.
