Just got a spot 2 jn the mail. I cannot resist gadgets.

http://www.findmespot.com/en/

A bit pricey.. But Father's Day was a good excuse. Easy setup and very accurate. Taking a 2 week trip from Nashville to Maine end of this month.. Thought it would be cool to use along the way.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade or be disrespectful, but I'm curious why people use these with their motorcycles? Maybe I'm missing something, but won't a cell phone do more for no extra cost and there are free apps that will allow people to track you if you give them permission to (the NSA not included... ;)). I guess having a reliable signal comes in handy for CDR type riding but I've seen a lot of people ride around highways with these things on their bikes. I guess I just don't get it and hope you can hit a fellow gadget whore up with some knowledge :)

There are many places with no cell service. I have heard of somebody using one every time I have been riding in the Smokey mountains on the main roads.

I was on the road for six weeks last year and three of those with out cell service so the spot is for emergency and my dad loves to follow my tracks. The wife is setting it up right now for the Colorado trip. ::026::

Did y'all read about their new sat phone? Cool.
The Orange Box has saved lives, no matter the good or bad people have to say about their service.
Now for the argument; mount on the bike, or on your person?

Up in this neck of the woods, cell phone coverage is ONLY in the communities. Once you leave town, no phone. I have been looking at a new item .. inReach SE. It looks pretty good for my purposes. www.inreachcanada.com. It's good to know you can summon help if you get in a bind, especially for an old dog. Let's be careful out there. R ::012::

How new is that Rem? I thought I did a pretty thorough search a few months back...
Or is it only available in Canada? I see in the name...
Wow, great service! Month by month, suspend-able service, no more expensive than some cell services. Seems to me you gotta have one Rem.

They are just shipping this month. Very new for this model. I tried to order one last night but they don't even have one yet. I'm on the list. It's just the ticket for my situation. Send money. R. ::014::

Plenty of apps that track you and let you share - it's even built into the latest versions of iOS - "Find My Friends" or something like that.

On Android there is an app called cradar that uses the accelerometer to detect a fall and subsequent lack of motion, then sends a text:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=actionxl.mandown&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImFjdGlvbnhsLm1hbmRvd24iXQ..

But of course you have to be in coverage for these to work., I carry a spot in the front chest pocket of my jacket in case I am in the middle of no-where and get separated from the bike. I tell the GF when I am out that she can check the track if I don't come back on time ... in case I get knocked out. Also carry it when I am on the MTB - even with friends - we often go pretty far out and if something were to happen it'd be nice to know we could summon help to get someone out in an emergency. I can't imagine making my 16 y.o. son ride out to get help if I broke a leg or collar bone - or having to leave him either.

Just a gadget...nah. I got one because there were too many times when I was off pavement when the road/trail started to get interesting. Since I ride alone 99% of the time, I had to let wisdom win over desire and turn around at that point. Most places I ride have spotty to no cell coverage. I got the Spot so I could go more places where a solo rider would be unwise to travel. Even if I'm knocked out my wife can see where I was and know what area to send help. Much better than her not having any guess at where my body lays. In the first week I owned it I went someplace I would not have gone without it... and I got stuck for about 45 minutes. Can't argue with success. ::010::

As far as body vs bike mount. I have it on the bike because I'm concerned about breaking it if I fall on it during a get-off that would cause me to get that separated from the bike. I just don't know what the is the best mounting site.

I like the adventure add on (extra 49).. So it tracks the progress every ten minutes.. Again.. Gadget.
Nope, not just a gadget... here's why the extra $49 is worth it. Say you crash and are unconscious (or worse) and are in no condition to press the HELP button. The device will keep sending your location every 10 mins until the batteries run out. Assuming someone is watching your track, they will see you've been stationary for a lot longer than you should have been, and will try to contact you, or contact the authorities to go check on you.

It's much more than a gadget for those of us who ride in remote areas (even if you have a riding partner but no cell service, it's the next best way to summon help). For those who ride solo a lot, it's pretty much a no-brainer.

Doubt your body will break that little bugger. It's the three by three circle of ribs under the device that will break. ::019::

Its cheap insurance to me and alittle piece of mind for my wife. I got mine on the handlebars broken ribs won't kill you but a broken rib that lacerates your liver and your in deep trouble.
