There are one or two here that have done it. The only down side that I've read is that if you turn down the speedo, your formerly accurate odometer will also be turned down. I know it's a blanket statement, I hate blanket statements, but (all) motorcycle speedos are off. Just subtract in your head, it will become reflex.

I checked the ODO against my GPS yesterday - it's 2% different. Without knowing how accurate the GPS is I wouldn't be prepared to say that it's the bike that's off. 2% difference between two devices that may or may not have their own levels of inaccuracy is not very much - might as well call it even!

So when I say I got 46mpg yesterday, two-up with Jesses fully loaded, you can trust that number ::024::

Speedo inaccuracy doesn't bother me - I know it's 4mph over at 60, I can subtract that number if I really care... or look at the GPS.

Trusting the numbers? With nothing else to go by, absolutely. Could that 2% be tire wear? ::010::

My spedo is of by 10%+ I could be doing around 71mph and the spedo reads 63mph. I've checked it with my GPS and with a radar speed trap sign we have around here. That is too far off for my liking, Plus if the speed it off who is not to say the miles traveled on the bike are not correct.

I consistantly drive 9mph over the limit. This way I think I am a speed demon >:D when in reality I'm close enough. ::26::

Ok, I'm gonna pick nits, be a nit picker; speedo should read 71, and radar should read 63. O:) Somewhere in the laws it states the odometer must be accurate, for warranty and resale, and all that. Again, tire wear/diameter comes into play a little bit. Same law, speedo can have an error of up to something like 11% positive, never negative, so as we've seen, we're about 9-10% positive. 10% is an easy number to shave off in your mind if it's really important. And it's cheap.

I don't understand the crisis if the speedo is off. I do understand if the Odo was off on the + side.
Most riders use a gps. My gps reads the correct mph and I never look at the bikes speedo.
Like Don says, you know it is off, fix it in your head.. ::002::

I don’t think the odometer is right either. I don’t have a GPS to gauge by, but there are a few places that I believe I know the miles to and from and I'm seeing different numbers. My most obvious experience was a 290 mile round trip I’ve done a number of times and it’s all of two roads. I’ve done it on motorcycles and in cars. A couple weeks ago I clocked 303 miles or +4.3% on the same trip on the XTZ12. So I think 13 miles came out of nowhere.

Not planning on doing anything about it. I endorse … ::021::

On an 1800 km trip last week, my odometer ended up being 3% higher than the mileage clocked on my gps. My speedometer is 8% high compared to the gps. I think both are excessive variances. But I am not sure I want to spend my dollars on a Speedohealer. A better seat and windscreen have priority for me.

Over a several hundred mile trip (compared to my GPS) the speedometer reads 6.1% fast and the Odometer is about 2.0% fast., so I installed a SpeedoHealer this past weekend. Pretty easy install.

With the SpeedoHealer installed (set to -6.1%) the Speedo reads correctly and the odometer reads about 4% slow.

I stupidly ordered one off e-bay... it showed a harness and I assumed plug and play. When I got it, I read over the instructions and saw that it was a wire splice fun fest... and not easily reversible. I sent it back and do the 10% thing in my head.

Personally, they can make accurate speedometers and I find it appalling that they don't. My sister used to set her clock ahead so she would not be late. In reality, she just never knew what time it was.

YMMV,

Lisa

My speedometer reads a solid 5 mph fast. Not sure if my odometer is off, will have to check. One thing is for sure, my mpg is always 3mpg less than what the dash computor displays. Yamaha must be using that "new" math :D

Same here as Stevepsd, only I installed the speedDRD. Set it several different times, ended up on 6.1%, ODO is off now -4%, speedo is little over my GPS.

In the latest Motorcycle Consumer News they have a comparison test between the new BMW GTL1600 and the Honda Gold Wing. Their tests show that at an indicated 65 mph, the Wing is actually going 65.2 and the BMW is going 62.5. So, motorcycles can have accurate speedos if the manufacturers want to and evidently some do at least on some models.

Is the speedometer inaccuaracy a warranty issue?

Can it be corrected at the dealer by tweaking a hidden parameter?

Perspiring minds want to know!

Not when it's considered 'normal'.

Oh I know they can be accurate. I have a Kawasaki Versy and it is only off my 1 or 2 percent off. When I am doing 65 my GPS will read 63, I can live with that.
