Byways and backways (a couple of very backways) into the heart of the Flat Top-Pocahontas Coalfield in Mercer and McDowell Counties, WV Mining began in the 1880s and extraction of the high-grade metallurgical coal continued through the energy boom 1970s. A few small mines remain today but since 1990 this coalfield has been in decline and outmigration has robbed the area of 75% of its population.

Ashland, WV, now a tourist destination, is representative of the many mining camps that sprang up around coal mines in the Coalfield's heyday.

Amazingly beautiful country. I drove through many years ago and fell in love with it. Maybe some day I can ride it.

You're a lucky guy.

Paul

A Versys is absolutely perfect for riding there.

Nice job on the video.
W Virginia has been one of my favorite places to ride since my first motorcycle trip there in 1978.

Today 2 09 Versi went fishing on the Wise River in Montana. Had a great day on a great road and a beautiful piece of water. Fly fishing and riding - can't get any better than that.

Still trying to find out who was on a Blue '09 on Needles Highway up near Mt Rushmore a week ago Thursday. Made me wish I was on my green one instead of the van. Hmmm.....it was worth it, I had all my kids and grandkids there with me. Forgive me, I'll take that over a ride, any ride, ANY day. :)

Nice video! Thanks for sharing. 8)

Your right about the miners back then. :( It reminds me of the song: "I owe my soul to the company store" by Tennessee Ernie Ford

Glad you enjoyed it sir!

Here's another song of the same ilk by a 'MACDowell' county native that you might like...
