Just received the Oct. 2013 issue in my mailbox. Not all testers slight our ST. Always liked "Cycle World". Very nice, balanced article of the wrap up of their long term test, subtitled: "Adventure Made Easy". Some of our forum members quoted. Very nice.
Ending sentence: "Despite some stiff competition from BMW and KTM, the Yamaha Super Tenere remains one of the most versatile and capable machines on the market". ::008::

The guy over on Motorcycle USA considered it ideal for two up riding. He specifically picked the Tenere for the room, comfort and type of power delivery.

I completely agree. It does make a top level two up bike.

So that's two sources that don't do the usual " great, but" stuff.

I saw that article. What I also noticed was that in 15,000 miles, they had nothing go wrong with the bike.

It is interesting how different people see things. One tester thought the suspension was plush, and I thought the front suspension was incredibly harsh until I changed fork springs.

That was my favourite part of the article too. Repair costs - $0.

Excellent!

And "no recall issues". A subtle swipe at the sexier B _ _ 's? Not bashing them, really. Just thanking my lucky stars I ended up picking an S10, pretty much sight unseen many moons ago based on the engine design. But wow, the whole machine has risen to the top levels. That type of reliability has to be #1 for a solo adv rider.

To be fair, us Yanks that took delivery of the first shipment, did have a recall.
O-ring might have been installed improperly on the fuel pump.

Not a biggie though. :)

Yamaha should call another recall and install 20amp mini fuses into the clutch lever.. :D
This was an amazing introduction or I should say a seduction in getting a Flash done.. :p

CW liked the new Yamaha FZ-09 as well. I like it also, waiting for my local dealer to take delivery of one this month so I can check it out.

They had one at the Yamaha display at the Indy Moto GP last month. Looks good, but kinda small. I am 5' 11".

It does look small, Fred.
Actually this is one thing that I have wondered about wrt. the ST. My dealer wasn't happy with the sales of the Tenere, and his take was it is too big and tall to appeal to the masses. Another dealer had an FJR owner order one and then take it back after 200 miles. She said she thought he was too short for it, after the FJR. The Super Tenere IS a tall bike, for its weight. Given that the average US male is 5'9" (and an hefty 196 lbs), are most ST fanatics above that? Are we a extra large group? I know there are some big guys at HoeSTer's gatherings here in the PNW. Just a theory to throw out there.

Yes, the S10 is big and fully loaded it is heavy. But after just returning from 11,000 mile cross continent trip, 2up, in my view it is a great bike for a long haul. Oh, I have just clocked 15,000 miles and not a single maintence issue. Replaced my rear brake pads, that is it. (gotta stop riding the brake on those hills in BC!) ::012::

Here are photos of the article (not reprinted - that would be illegal) for all those that don't have access to Cycle World or can't wait until they put it up on their website (usually a couple of weeks delay).
This was the first bike magazines that I bought as a kid, so I am partial to it (like "Yamaha"). Some criticize it but I find it pretty fair and balanced. Met some of the editors at test rides and like their attitude and take on the biking world in general.

Wow Fred I thought you were sitting on a mini bike for a minute. That bike is tiny. Well at 6'3 that won't work for me. I think it's time for a reflash of the ecu.

Mine's not for sale. But the price just went up. By the time the planet figures out how remarkable this thing is, AND that you can't get one anymore, mine is gonna be designated as a collectable. (Bet the press talking about the bike "historically", will be a far kinder take. Idiots)

Might start washing it a couple of times a year.

I am 5' 10" and it is fine. If it was a top heavy bike like the old DL1000 I wouldn't be so fine. I think the visuals freak people out most, because it's not that hard to manage.

On the other hand if you are 5' 10" with ducks disease I would imagine it being a bit of an issue.

I'm only 5' 8" with a 29" inseam and I love mine! ::012::

I don't even use any of the *low* seats, and I often run the Cee Baileys modded seat in the high position. The new-to-me Seat Concepts (Thank You, PowersUSA! ::008:: ) is a much taller profile seat than stock or the Cee Baileys, so I've only used it in the low position on the bike.

Like you, Graham, I think a lot of people see the bike and get scared off at its apparent height and rather huge presence. It's really quite easy to handle once you're mounted.

Agreed! I am 5'9" or so with a 30" inseam, and I don't find the S10 awkward at all. Well, okay, I admit I am not exactly graceful getting on the thing, but once mounted, no worries! I also find it a lot easier to put my S10 on and off the centre stand than my previous 2009 Moto Guzzi Stelvio. Part of the reason is likely that the Yamaha is somewhat lighter.

Ha! I made the quotes section at the end of the article - even though the first sentence of my response is missing.

Guess I'll have to buy the issue so I can show people I got published in a major motorcycle rag. ;)
