picked up my 16 ES last week and in the process of doing my break in before a few long trips down the US.

Coming off a 07 Vee, what a change. This is truly the machine I had been looking for ! I'm still getting used to the nervous throttle. Installing a laminar lip as pretty much eliminated buffeting.

questions:
  • 1st gear sometimes a little difficult to find. I find myself having to release the clutch a little to be able to "fall" into 1st. not sure if this is normal or if it will get smoother with time? would going to synth oil help?
  • There's about a 7-9 km/h difference between the speedo and what my GPS is reporting. normal?
  • Wondering about risers vs handlebar change to bring it back maybe and inch and half? Id like to make sure the cables still reach?
  • rear rack change: I'm looking for a rear rack (change from stock) that can take a rotopax 1 gallon (maybe 2) flat?

1st gear difficult to find - your S10 is still in the break-in period. It will take even longer than that to settle. Notwithstanding, even after many miles the 1st gear may be a little difficult to engage. You will sometimes find that it's in neutral instead of 1st and that may be dangerous. So make it a habit to look at the neutral indicator to ensure that 1st gear is properly engaged.

As for speed difference, all are around 10% off (with the speedo showing a higher speed than actual). I believe that's common with other brands as well (especially Japs).

I cannot help you with your other 2 questions, but I'm, sure others will.

With 8K on my bike now, it shifts so much smoother now, than new. I suppose yours would be the same.

Raising the bars 1 to 1.5" should be no problem with cables. Mine are 3.5" higher so made my own brake line extensions.

MPH diff is normal, and on most all the bikes I've owned.

Enjoy the bike!

Hmm looking at the product page again I might be wrong about the rotopax fitting underneath the rack (I could've sworn I'd seen *something* that went in there, though!), though as you'll see it does specifically mention some sort of support for mounting rotopax kit.

The Rotopax absolutely will NOT fit in the Altrider cavity.

Congrats and it will get better with miles. These bikes for some reason need 5,000+ miles to really feel smooth and find their groove. The shifter will get there.

"Nervous throttle" makes me think you have been keeping it in Sport mode. You might see if T mode is more comfortable at this point.

The speedo error would be right for a Gen1 bike, but the Gen2 bikes are typically within 1-2 mph. Not sure what is going on there.

Can't comment on the risers, but if you search I know they have been the subject of multiple previous threads.

Congratulations on the new bike. The Altrider rack is drilled to accept the Rotopax mount on the top. I use a 1.75 gallon Rotopax, however you can squeeze 2 gallons in it. I then put a dry duffle bag on top. Yes, the speedometers are a little optimistic. The nervous throttle you describe seems to be one of the biggest complaints about this bike. You can make it better by removing the slack in the throttle cable, adjusting the idle screws, synchronizing the throttle bodies and adjusting the CO settings. All these topics are covered in this forum, with lots of good info and even some pictures. I went one step farther and got a Throttle Tamer from G2 Ergo, with a 400 series cam. The throttle is still a little touchy, but I like it a lot better than it was. The area under the Altrider rack is a good place to store items like tie downs, tow strap, tools or a first aid kit. Enjoy your new bike.

Looks like they didn't correct the euro bikes... My Gen2 is at least 8% out...and that's being generous ???

Same here, not too bothered, gives a safety margin!

As for the gear shift, I'm at 850 miles and it's gotten a lot smoother, a lot better after the first service ::008::

He makes a custom bag that fits inside that space. Surprisingly you can store a lot of items in the bag.

Mine had barely any greese and it felt like a new tranny once lubed!!

I got a nice aircompressor and tire repair kit from Aerostich. Put 'em in a bag and they fit nicely in the space under the AltRider rack. Out of sight and out of mind yet there when (if) needed.
