Long and frustrating story but i'll try to keep it a short one so here goes ......

2 weeks after i picked up my new ST at the dealers back in august i noticed that the chrome was coming off the spokes (on both wheels). A week later i had an appointment at the dealers for the first oil change so i showed him the spoke problem. Now after almost 3 months i finally had an email from Yamaha that the dealer can replace the spokes.

My question here is .... should i agree on just replacing the pokes or should i insist on replacing both wheels ?

I would push really hard for a complete replacement. Lacing spokes and getting everything perfect is no easy task and chances of the shop tech being an expert are slim.
First I have heard of this. Did Yamaha report anything back to the dealer about this being an issue?

Yamaha never mentioned this was issue but i would be surprised if i was the only one with this problem. I'm heading for the dealer this morning to hear what he has to say.

Good luck. Please let us know how it works out. Hopefully this is not an issue affecting many bikes.

Rip into them and tell them that you insist on replacement wheels. I'm actually amazed that they're not stainless steel.

Yeah thats an outrage, stand your ground and go for a complete replacement, the amount of cash you laid should be backed up with good service. I agree with the replacment of spokes, I would have thought that was quite specialist.

Good luck

If the bike was let say a year old and had plenty of thousand miles on it i would understand and probably go along with the spokes being replaced. But the problem started after 2 weeks already so i think they ow me more then refurbished wheels.

I think they will only change the damaged part and if the spokes can be changed separtely than thats all they will do. Past experiences dealing with warranty issues, but good luck. If they do just change the spokes any vibration take it back eventually a complete new wheel will come your way if available.

If Yamaha won't reimburse the dealer for the entire wheel, they dealer's hands are pretty much tied. Good luck, but I don't think you're going to get very far "insisting".

My experience of Yamaha warranty issues has always been positive. However, I have a very forceful character and will use very persuasive measures and arguements to ensure I get what I want. It is a consumers market right now ... use the 'sort it or get the adverse publicity that'll end in tears'. Toyota Prius anyone? ;)

What is the standard manufacturer warranty that comes with this bike? Any options for an extended warranty from big mamma Yamaha.

Say Greg, the post was 2.5 years old... from November of 2010. I think it's probably been resolved by now. I have no idea if the First Edition bikes had chromed spokes or not. Or what the EU warranty period was, or if YES was available to them.

I think everyone's tarnish pretty easily. Maybe if I cleaned the dirt off I could see if mine are tarnished? :D

This is a common issue, much reported on this forum - just do a search on "Spokes". The truth is the spoke quality is just shite.

I've had both wheels re-spoked under warranty due to corrosion (together with other bits and pieces) - the second set is now fizzing away nicely after 6 months!! And yes, I've tried keeping them clean/ACF 50 etc. Yamaha UK have said a big NO to any more work on my wheels as the bike is now well out of its 2yr (UK) warranty.

I've had no issues with my dealer doing the re-spoking - they did a good job - though I'm sure the same can't be said for every dealer.

The silver rims on my bike are no better - I'm sure they're made of chocolate or some other soft material as they seem to pit at the slightest provocation.

I'm now looking at the best part of £300 to get stainless spokes and have the rims either powder coated or anodised.

I'm sure there will be those who will quite happily say "Ride More and Worry Less", but these are safety critical items, so keeping them in good condition to is quite important to me......
