How is the protection from the Yamaha one? I havent seen to many review on it?
Better than the plastic OE one. But, minimal as far as aftermarket. I have an Altrider also, but am under no misconception that it's a heavy duty piece. I'm a pavement princess, so all I need protection from is curbs, parking stops, and other urban "hazards". I changed the oil the other day, and was surprised how many scratches, and gouges it had accumulated. TABASCO (forum member) is the only one that I know of that makes a near indestructible skid cage.

Decide how much protection you need/want, and go from there.

Im in the same use.

Do you happen to have a photo of it on the bike?

Can you still pull the oil filter off?

Does it cover all the way to the back of the engine?

Cheers

1) No, but there are plenty on the internet, and even the Altrider web site.
2) Some here have reported getting the filter off w/o removing the plate, but I'm too anal to let all the oil get all over the inside. I think it also depends on which filter that you use.
3) Yes.

Here are pictures of the skid plate. You can change the short oil filter without removing the plate. The long filter is close. The plate provides protection from debris/rocks. I went with the altrider plate because it is a frame mounted skid plate.
Thanks,
Randy

The Yamaha skid plate is held in place with three bolts so it is very easy to remove or re install for oil change, I used one trouble free for 70,000 miles but replaced it last spring with Trex crashbars and skid plate because I wanted a little more protection
