Hi Folks

I've just sold my GSA and need a replacement scoot, I found the GSA was top heavy and a bit intimidating as i'm not the tallest of riders. I have not ridden ST yet but plan to next week however can someone advise, perhaps an ex GS rider, is the ST less intimidating and better balance with the acclaimed lower centre of gravity and adjustable seat height.

I found myself tip toeing with the GS and am hoping that the ST is not going to be the same considering that ST is tipping the scales slightly higher than the GS.

Welcome Murdoch - I'm ex-Durbs from YWP. Welcome. Regarding a replacement for the GSA, the S-10 is great and very able. Like me and many owners on this forum, a lot had GSA's before. However, seat height is a different matter. I'd recommend having a test ride and make sure its on the lowest setting. I personally have not found much difference in height compared to the GSA. Also, do a search on this forum and see previous postings regarding seat height etc.

I switched from a Standard (Non Adventure) R1200GS and the seat height of the Tenere "feels" lower.

On paper they are the same, in the real world I think the Yamaha is narrower where you put your legs down (mainly cos unlike BMW Yamaha engineers know where the Cylinders belong)

I think the Yamaha also carries the weight lower so at low speed "feels" lighter, despite being a bit heavier - although not by much as when Yamaha say a bike wighs 250kg independant scales say it weighs 250kg, whereas when BMW claim a GS weighs 205kg independant scales disagree by about 30Kg.

Not bashing the BMW (or I would mention most of the Yamaha's extra weight goes on a Final Drive that won't expire with 2-3k on the clock) but swapping directly from one to the other the Yamaha does feel more manageable at low speed and my feet are more easily planted.

I have ridden both and I'm only 5'7". The tenere feels much lighter to me and I don't have a problem with the seat height at all. I actually put the seat in the high position when hitting the freeway on longer trips and still have no problems with the height or weight.

I had a 2010 GSA and yes, it was very top heavy, and should be since it was a fuel truck on two wheels. I'm 6' with a 33" inseam, had the GSA on the highest setting (kind of tip toe) to help with my knees. I can touch the ground much better on the ST in the highest setting and still feel very comfortable. I have also noticed a lot less vibration on the ST than on the GSA.

I am very pleased with the ST!

I own a S10 and like it a great deal, but you're really splitting hairs to characterize it as significantly lighter, shorter, or less intimidating than a GSA. If this was the problem that caused you to sell the GSA, you need to make a bigger change than this.

I'd suggest taking a long look at the Triumph 800, or if you like BMWs, the F700GS. Both of these bikes ARE significantly lighter, shorter, and more nimble.

No I'm not brand concious at all, bought the BMW as it came at a good price for the model however I hadn't ridden a bike for about twenty years so I probably went big to quickly and did not feel connected to the GSA at all. I have test ridden the Tiger 800 XT and found it brought a grin to my face. ::021::

As it did to mine. I don't think I've felt instantly one with a bike on a test ride as I did on the 800 Triumph. And because it is lighter and has the more efficient chain-drive, it is about as fast as the S10 (although it does have less torque).

One caution on the XC (not XT) - it has tubed tires. Although I like the features of the XC, I'd have to go with the non-XC to get the compromise road/trail 19" wheels and tubeless. Same with the BMW - I'd get the 19" F700GS over the F800GS, even though for some silly reason BMW derates the 800cc twin in the F700GS a bit although I think the difference has been reduced from the F650GS.
