What aluminum bags have you seen smashed like a coke can? My one and only tip over happened on the street. Bike was pretty much in free fall... till it stopped. I've got more of a scuff on the factory tip-over guard than on the Jesse.
And I understand the economics. My purchase is going to hurt for a while, but they're oh so nice. And see my plus one on the inverted grab bar. It works, with a spacer.
My friends GS side bags got all messed up on an off road lay over.

Thanks for the suggestions. That's what I like: functional and inexpensive solutions!

Or Google the following and go to images: nelson-rigg cl-850 "super tenere"

Currently on sale for $108 here: http://www.helmetcity.com/page/HC/PROD/classicseries/nelsonriggcl850?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=sidecar_google_shopping&scpid=2&scid=scsho262705

They've been in production forever, are 35 liters per side, and collapsable for the "most of the time" that you want to store them. They do come with rain covers that work ok, but as with any soft bag, keep your things in a plastic trash bag for added waterproofing

On my son's WeeStrom recently:

This looks right up my ally: inexpensive and not fugly. Think I'll order these and try them out on my upcoming AR trip.

OK, got the bags tonight and did the quick install. They look really good on the S10. Right bag looks like it will sag in a bit when loaded- but won't ever hit the tire. The left bag is sitting directly on the exhaust guard. Hope this doesn't get hot enough to melt the bag ::005::

See Pics here:

 How do you get pics to show up in the post? I thought you just pasted the url in between the
- obviously that didn't work for me.

So here are the links to my Flickr page:

Here are the Nelson Rigg CL-850 bags that regularly can be found for about $110.

As with most soft bags, the bottom ends can swing in toward the wheel. The left bag sits on the muffler cover and I taped a pad to the cover to keep it from chafing. Ugly but usually covered by the bags and it worked:

To keep the right from swinging into the wheel, I used the hand rail from the opposite side and the bag hung almost perfectly vertical.

The right grab handle remained at home and the left set of bolts were put back in place without a handle, as shown in the middle photo. The bolt heads not having something to seat against was a non-issue.

I bought the Nelson Rigg CL-850 bags not realizing there is nothing on the right side to prevent the right saddlebag from swinging into the wheel. I wanted to keep the handles on for when my wife rides along. So, I made my own u-shaped bracket to hold the right bag out away from the wheel out of some aluminum tubing, and bolted it on underneath the handle. That was a lot cheaper option than buying the mounting brackets.

Wolfman was making racks that fit the ST but, since just recently has stopped building racks all together. They posted a letter on their site. They will have racks until supply runs out ( out of ST racks). They have designed and include all securement to mount to most all racks ( also stated in the letter).
