Just look at the carousel in the "For Sale" section and your head will spin. Through the years I have been on many message boards because I am a man who's had close to thirty bikes so far, but I swear that I have never, ever, seen so many people selling their "beloved" bike, which in this particular case happen to be the Super T.
And I've never seen a bike that depreciates so quick. I don't care about the reason or reasons people are selling their Tenere. They just do, and the prices are getting more ridiculous every day. I have a hard time making any sense of what's going on.

Quoting from last week when somebody made a similar value comment in a BMW thread:

Checkswrecks said:
...I was in the 2011 pre-purchase for the initial bikes and think we bought at $11,995. Clearly Yamaha North America ordered too many of the Gen1 bikes and the system is still working to move them. For new buyers it's a screaming value since CycleTrader is showing brand new 2013s for less than $9,000, yet few original 2012s are re-selling used for less than $7,000. The 2014/2015 bikes are starting a bit less than $11,000 brand new for non-ES.

Meanwhile the least expensive still-new 2015 R1200GS bikes start at $16,175 and the 2012 used bikes are as low as $9,600 with a fair number between $10-11,000.

Sorry, but to me the [BMW] value isn't there. And I still prefer the engine/transmission of the Yamaha over the opposed twin.

And as for SO many for sale, we seem to have this same thread every year at this time. Come about August-September we will have the threads asking about total redesign and whether the model will be continued.

As CW pointed out, this is the time of year to try to sell your bike, any bike. As for too many S10's, not really, consider how many GS's on sale on the same site, Ebay UK 300 GS's and 77 S10, so about equal........... Now go ride your pride and joy ::008::

Bikes lose value, that's why we ride them for fun and don't use them as a retirement fund.

I just sold a 12 for cheap because I picked up a 15. While I lost quite a bit of money it was nothing like what I lost when I sold my Vstrom.

Not sure what other motorcycle forums you visit but all the other forums I visit have lots of bikes for sale, many sellers have their prices set to high so they don't sell, lots of overpriced Tenere as well , to me it sounds like you would probably be one of those over priced sellers, that's fine you might get lucky but most likely not from me.

I'm good with over priced sellers... the more the merrier!
Sell them for more, so wen I'm ready to sell mine and I can maximize the return for the next bike.

I'm a long term owner of bikes, and don't swap them out often (last bike I sold was 9 years old and I was the original owner), but if I were, I'd be concerned about these fire sales I see some people having (new and used) dragging the overall market down with them.

I think that you are seeing many due to the age of the riders who purchased them and health plays a big part of riding. Some feel that it is safer that they don't ride anymore and I hope that day doesn't come very quickly for me. Myself, after fracturing my left shoulder at the rally last Sept-Oct, my wife asked me to not ride off road anymore. I guess what she doesn't know won't hurt her. I am feeling the aches and pains of age but continue to ride because I love it and have been doing it all of my life. (I had a mini bike before I had a bicycle). Sorry to see so many selling the S10's but a lot of them have or are purchasing a new version with cruise, Electronic suspension. It really runs in a cyclic pattern as was pointed out by Checkswrecks.

In my assessment, I believe most of the S10 riders are older than 40 and have disposable income, so they may be able to quickly buy a new bike and sell it when the aches and pains come. Also, the amount of 12-13's that are listed, may indicate most peoples desire to upgrade to the 14 and up models.

I agree, some of these sellers have listed their bikes way too high, and some have lowered their price $1500 and still haven't sold them. I believe these sellers will have their bikes continue to sit, unless they lower there price. Wise buyers can still find 13's for $8500 out the door.

I think it's very exciting and fun when you get a new bike. That said, any vehicle is a pure loss investment.
name of the game is how long you can have fun with it, and amortize the loss over the years :)

It comes down to personal situation/preferences etc..
I highly doubt it's model specific. Plenty of GS WC and 1190s for sale up here.

Interestingly, there aren't that many Tenere's for sale in Canukistan. There's a few new ones, but not deeply discounted. The used ones, hold their value well.
Think about it..my Tenere full set up (aftermarket suspension, ecu flash, full exhaust, protection) maybe cost me $16 grand all in. So for the 5 years that I used it to date considering that I might get $8000 for it if I sold now, on the used market, it cost me $1600/year...for a bike that is pretty much perfect, is well, priceless.

Personally, I'm on a 5-7 year plan with the majority of my bikes...actually only my big adventure bikes.
The last one, I kept for 5 yrs, and 55km. the tenere is now getting on to 5 yrs and 70km. I'm starting to get the itch to switch, but honestly have not found a better bike than my well set up 2011. Yes the KTM is tempting, but the maintenance aspect is a PITA, and the price is steep. That said, you get a stupid fast motor, and proper off road suspenders.
The new honda is a contender, but I'm pissed at them for putting tubes on a bike of this price, and intended use.
Many say the 2014 and up tenere is a huge change. For me, it's not enough reason to sell mine at cut price, and pay full retail for a bike that's 85% the same from the one I'm currently riding.

why the hell am I typing this now instead of riding? Because I'm stuck at work ::010::

For whatever reason, motorcycle owners in general tend to be emotional about their bikes, especially when it comes time to sell them. It is easy to offend a seller by a reasonable offer, but one that the seller doesn't believe to be reasonable because their bike is special ... low miles, has certain add-ons, never dropped, always dealer maintained, etc.

IMO, the blue book value means absolutely nothing when it comes time to price your motorcycle for sale. Instead you have to look at what prices the bikes are actually moving at. Like it or not, to move a 2012 or 2013 Super Tenere in my area, you need to be willing to accept $7000-$8000. Anything higher than that, the bike sits on the market unsold. If you have farkles on the bike, the best bet is to remove those and sell them separately, because unless your buyer wants the same ones that you have, they're not going to find nearly the value in them that you do.

I believe that the above begins to explain why it appears so many Super Tenere's are for sale. If the bikes aren't priced well, they sit on the market and then it appears that there are many for sale, because none are moving.

Regarding depreciation, my view is that few pay anywhere near MSRP for this bike. For example, some pay as little as 70% of MSRP, or less. So to that buyer, the bike doesn't appear to depreciate any faster than another bike, since they only see a 10% loss in the first year. On the other hand, to a buyer who pays MSRP for that same bike, it feels like the bike dropped 40% of its value in the first year. Bottom line is, you have to buy smart. Secondly, you have to buy what you want, because a motorcycle is a depreciating toy, not an investment. My view is, the depreciation should be a non-issue, since it was just the price of having fun.

I may be a resident expert in this area having owned a 13, 14 and a 15 Tenere. Having bought 3 different bikes I’ve noticed a few things. The prices are all over the place. Some guys think their bikes are gold and ask way to high of a price and will sit on their bikes for weeks even months trying to sell them at overflated prices. Some guys like me when it comes time to sell are ready to sell and price their bikes to sell. I don’t see the purpose of asking a price your never going to get. If your ready to sell then price it to sell. I’ve never had people try and low ball me because imprice my bikes to where someone see the price and says that’s a good deal I want or need that bike. That’s the same way I buy my bikes. I know a good deal when I see it and that’s the bike I’ll buy. I’m not going to spend a premium for a bike that someone feels is still worth what he paid for it 2-3 years ago. These are mototorcyckes and lose value. I still see people asking ove $10k for used Gen 1 bikes. That’s absurd no matter how many farkles you have on it. Then I see Gen 2 bikes for $8500 and someone thinks there Gen 1 will sell before that. I’d think not. I don’t get emotionally attatxhed to bikes. I’ve owned well over 30 bikes in the past 20 years and lost a ton of money buying and selling but I’ve had a good time doing it. The key to buying and selling is to find someone like minded as yourself. For me I have to find the right seller that’s not looking to make money. He wants to sell and is willing to take a little hit. There are tons out there. I know when I’m ready to sell if it hasn’t sold in 2 weeks it’s not priced right.

LACFD, I sent you the info on Gateway BMW..........feel the same way when buying/selling bikes. I sold my 2015 KLR650 with 29500 miles for a fair price in 5 days. I've seen some bikes listed on various forums and Craigslist for 6 months to a year. There are 6-10 year old KLRs listed right now on the St Louis CL for over $4000.00............you can buy a new leftover out the door for $5500.00. Deal...

Yes there are good deals out there you just have to be patient. I’ll look for the next few months. But I’d buy tomorrow if the deal was right. I want a 2014 or newer for sure. Yellow would be my first choice.

There's a yellow '16, zero miles, listed at Moto United beach cities in California for $10,990. In my experience, they'll give it to you without adding freight and setup. You'd pay tax where you live (assuming it's not Ca). I think that's pretty good.

If one REALLY follows ebay uk they will see that a huge ammount of Teneres on it have been for sale for months..some of them for more than 6 months so in fact that would mean not many S10 are actually changing ownership
