Weird colour? It's probably road grime. Clean it with some mild steel wool and soap and it should return to its original colour.

Not knowing where the color came from. Have you changed the Final Drive Fluid?

I've noticed that some take on kind of a gold or yellow tone over time and they can lose the coating and then corrode. This grungy one is for an 1995-ish XJ900, which is not interchangeable but has a similar design. It also points to how Yamaha has been using this general rear drive design for 30+ years, since the 1980s.

If you closely at the Super Ténéré's final drive you'll note that the input shaft with the pinion gear meets the ring gear off-center, unlike the pictured design above. This makes the Super T a fundamentally different design - a hypoid type final drive.

Is there a chance that it is stainless steel. As we know, stainless turns a different color when it gets hot. (exhaust). I would be surprised if that vent got that hot though. And BTW, stainless can corrode.

It appears to be galvanized, just like the spokes and the gear shifter. The same discoloration happens to them over time.
Chrome. It's getting more and more cheaply done as the years pass.
